DePaul Rolls Past Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The DePaul women's basketball team opened up a 15-point lead in the first half and never looked back in a 78-57 win at Missouri State on Sunday. The Blue Demons, ranked No. 17 in this week's AP poll and No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches top 25, were led by Caprice Smith's career-high 23 points.

After a Smith jumper and two Allie Quigley free throws to start the game, the Blue Demons went ice cold over the next five minutes. Meanwhile, Missouri State took a 7-4 lead before Missy Mitidiero converted a steal by Erin Carney with 14:45 on the clock.

On DePaul's next possession, Smith hit another jumper to give the Blue Demons a one-point advantage. As cold as the DePaul (5-1) offense started, the Blue Demon defense was as stifling. The defense effort routinely forced the Lady Bears to near shot clock violations that resulted in missed shots and bad passes. After taking the 7-4 lead, Missouri State went scoreless for nearly six minutes.

The Blue Demons increased a 15-11 advantage with an 11-2 run keyed by Mitidiero's three-pointer to put DePaul ahead, 29-15, with just under four minutes left in the first half. The opening period closed with the two teams playing even as Allie Quigley hit a deep three-pointer from the corner to give the visitors a 37-22 lead at intermission. The 15-point advantage was the largest lead of the first half.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Quigley's third three-pointer of the afternoon gave DePaul a 21-point lead at 46-25. The next 10 minutes of the second half saw the two teams trade baskets with a jumper by Roxanne Stiles closing the lead to 63-46.

Smith and Quigley combined for nine of the game's next 11 points with two free throws by Smith at 5:36 giving the Blue Demons their largest lead at 72-48. During the 9-2 run, Smith hit four free throws and a jumper while Quigley knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the afternoon.

Smith's 23 points included a 9-of-10 effort from the free throw line to go along with nine rebounds. Quigley added 16 points (4-5 3pt. FG) and six boards while Mitidiero chipped in 13 points, six rebounds and three assists. As a team, DePaul dished out 21 assists on their 25 field goals.

Missouri State (2-4) was led by Stiles with 16 points while Tahnee Balerio added 14 points.

The Blue Demons return home for a pair of games beginning on Thursday against No. 18/17 Rutgers. The BIG EAST opener is slated for a 7 p.m. start at McGrath Arena. The homestand closes on Wednesday, Dec. 13, with a Noon game against Northwestern.
