#17 DePaul Knocks Off Northwestern

CHICAGO – An 18-3 run midway through the second half turned a five-point deficit into a 10-point lead to put No. 17/18 DePaul past Northwestern, 74-66, on Wednesday afternoon at McGrath Arena. China Threatt and Caprice Smith scored 17 points each to lead the Blue Demons to their seventh straight victory and 20th in-a-row against opponents from Illinois.

DePaul (7-1) scored the first 12 points of the game and jumped out to an 18-4 lead with seven buckets on the first 11 attempts. The lead grew as large as 18 points when Threatt hit a free throw for a 29-11 advantage with just over six minutes left in the first half.

Northwestern whittled the DePaul lead away and closed to within seven points at halftime with the Blue Demons taking a 35-28 lead into intermission.

The second half started with the Wildcats scoring six straight points to force DePaul into a time out with just a three-point lead. Coming out of the break, Northwestern (6-4) kept the pressure on and eventually took the lead on two free throws by Sara Stutz at 40-39.

Trailing by five points with just under 14 minutes left, Threatt rattled in a three-pointer before a Julie Bielawski bucket for the Wildcats. On DePaul's next possession, Missy Mitidiero hit another three for the Blue Demons followed by a Threatt layup to put the Blue Demons back in the lead at 47-46.

Allie Quigley scored the game's next seven points to continue the DePaul run before Kristin Cartwright hit a free throw at 10:56 for a 54-47 Blue Demon advantage.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Smith stretched the advantage to a dozen with 5:50 left in the game and the Wildcats could get no closer than five points over the remainder of the afternoon. Nadia Bibbs hit a three with 27 seconds left to close the gap to 68-63 before two free throws by Quigley, two by Northwestern's A.J. Glausauer and breakaway baskets under full-court pressure for Threatt and Smith for the 74-66 final.

Smith and Threatt led all scorers with 17 points each while Smith added nine rebounds. Threatt grabbed four boards with three assists and two steals. Quigley added 12 points, all in the second half, to go with six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Jenna Rubino turned in nine points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Stutz led Northwestern with 15 points and was followed by 12 points from Glassauer and Bielawski and 11 points from Cartwright.
