#17 DePaul Wins 8th Straight Over Detroit

DETROIT – A sluggish start saw the DePaul women's basketball team in a tight game before an 18-5 run opened up a 12-point lead and the Blue Demons never looked back for an 81-57 win at Detroit. Missy Mitidiero's 13 points led five players in double-figures as DePaul's bench outscored the Detroit bench by a 39-7 margin.

Trailing 12-7, consecutive buckets by Jenna Rubino, Erin Carney and Sam Quigley put DePaul ahead by a point with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.

The two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before Erin Cattell started the game-deciding run with a three-pointer. When the dust settled, the Blue Demons held a 12-point lead at 34-22 in the final seconds of the first half. Detroit's Kandace Evans hit a three-pointer to make the halftime score, 34-25, in favor of DePaul.

DePaul (8-1) led by 17 points less than four minutes into the second half as Mitidiero scored 10 of her 13 points in the stretch. With 11 minutes left, a Rubino layup put the Blue Demons ahead by 21 points and the lead would fall below 20 on just two brief occasions over the remainder of the game. DePaul held a game-high 25-point advantage four different times in the final nine minutes of action.

Mitidiero's 13 points came with three three-pointers while the junior added two rebounds and two assists. Rubino and Carney totaled a dozen points apiece with Rubino becoming the 21st player in school history with 1,000 career points. Carney added seven rebounds and three assists while Rubino totaled a team-high eight boards. Caprice Smith chipped in 10 points with seven boards and Quigley came off the bench for 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Joyce Massey led Detroit (1-8) with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds while Sandi Brown added 12 points and eight rebounds.

DePaul continues the December road trip with the short drive to Illinois-Chicago on Sunday. Tipoff at the UIC Pavilion is set for 4 p.m. with live audio available at depaulbluedemons.com and an internet telecast on the Horizon League Network (www.horizonleague.org).

Postgame Notes: Jenna Rubino became the 21st player in school history with 1,000 career points… she now has 1,001 points in 104 career games… Rubino also moved into a tie for 29th all-time in career games… she is tied with current assistant coach Candis Blankson (1997-01)… DePaul's 8-1 start marks the fifth time in school history with an 8-1 record or better to begin the season… only the 1985-86 squad started the season at 9-0… the eight-game winning streak is tied for the 12th-longest run in program history… five players reached double-figures for the first time this season… the program has won 24 consecutive games against Horizon League opponents and is 98-30 all-time against league teams… DePaul has won two straight in the series with Friday being the first meeting since the 1985-86 campaign… overall, the Titans hold a 9-4 series advantage.
