Smith opened the game with a three-point play followed by a Quigley layup and three-pointer by Rubino to give DePaul (11-3) an early 8-0 advantage. The Cougars answered with six straight points followed by a six-point run for the Blue Demons. A Smith jumper with just over 16 minutes left gave DePaul a 12-6 lead.
Chicago State (4-11) continued the back-and-forth sequence of runs as they reeled off seven unanswered points and took a 13-12 lead on Chandra Timberlake's short jumper at 14:24.
The two teams traded baskets on consecutive trips down the floor before Quigley's three-pointer pushed DePaul ahead 17-15 with 13:38 left.
Following a Zondranika Williams jumper to bring Chicago State to within a point, Rubino's second trifecta of the afternoon started a 17-6 run that ended with DePaul holding a 38-26 advantage with 4:08 until intermission.
The Cougars pulled to within nine points early in the second half before the two teams went ice cold from the field. DePaul went scoreless for over five minutes following a Smith jumper at 17:48. Jasmin Dixon pulled Chicago State to within five points before Quigley scored on a layup and nailed a three-pointer to give the Blue Demons at 54-44 lead.
A Holly Medley steal led to a breakaway layup for China Threatt to put DePaul ahead by a dozen with 11:35 left in the game.
Chicago State didn't go away as they scored 13 of the game's next 19 points. A Laureen Pierson jumper in the lane brought the Cougars to within five points at the five-minute mark.
The Blue Demons put the game away over the next three minutes with an 8-1 run to build a 70-58 advantage with 2:19 on the clock. In the last two minutes, Timberlake converted a pair of three-point plays while Medley and Quigley hit free throws for the 77-71 final.
Smith added nine rebounds, two assists and two steals to her game-high 23 points. Quigley also pulled down nine boards and added five assists while Rubino went 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Medley came off the bench for seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Williams led Chicago State with 18 points and six assists while Alyssa Waldon scored 16 points.
DePaul resumes BIG EAST play against Marquette on Jan. 6 followed by West Virginia on Jan. 9. Both games start at 7 p.m. at McGrath Arena.
