DePaul Tops Georgetown

CHICAGO – The DePaul women's basketball team won for the second straight time on a 69-62 decision against Georgetown on Saturday night. With the win, the Blue Demons pull to .500 in BIG EAST play at 3-3 and stand at 13-6 overall. Caprice Smith led DePaul with a career-high 24 points as the Blue Demons led by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Trailing 6-3, the Blue Demons put together a 12-2 run to build an eight-point lead at 15-8. Four different players scored during the run with China Threatt's breakaway lay-up off a steal from Allie Quigley finishing the run.

Smith's third straight jumper pushed DePaul ahead, 21-13, with 8:18 left in the half before Jenna Rubino drilled a jumper for the first 10-point lead of the night.

Over the next three minutes, Threatt tallied two three-pointers and a jumper with the final trifecta putting DePaul up by 16 points at the five-minute mark. Threatt scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half to lead the Blue Demons to a 38-23 lead at intermission.

A Missy Mitidiero three-pointer early in the second half gave DePaul (13-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) its largest lead of the game at 18 points.

Georgetown (11-8, 1-5 BIG EAST) answered with nine straight points as Kieraah Marlow's bucket at 15:22 cut the deficit to 11 points.

The Hoyas kept the pressure on as Shanice Fuller's two free throws made the score 58-55 with 5:29 left in the game. After each team came up empty on consecutive possessions, Smith hit a jumper in the lane and was fouled by Katrina Wheeler. Smith converted the three-point play and increased the advantage to six points at 61-55.

In the final 82 seconds, the Blue Demons went a combined 6-for-6 from the line with Smith, Threatt and Quigley knocking down free throws for the 69-62 final.

Smith's grabbed six rebounds to go along with the 24 points while Rubino and Threatt added 14 points apiece. Rubino also grabbed five boards and dished out four assists.

Marlow led all scorers with 25 points while Wheeler totaled six points and 12 boards.

DePaul goes back on the road for a Wednesday night game at Connecticut. The Blue Demons and Huskies square off at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn., at 7:30 p.m. EST. The game can be seen in Chicago on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
