St. John's Storms Past DePaul

QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's jumped on DePaul from the opening tip with a 14-2 run and never looked back for a 78-61 win on Tuesday night. The Blue Demons closed to within five points with six minutes left in the game, but the Red Storm answered with a 15-0 run to secure the victory.

Three DePaul turnovers and three St. John's baskets saw the Red Storm in front, 6-0, just over two minutes into the game. China Threatt got the Blue Demons on the board with a lay-up, but the Red Storm scored the next eight points for the 14-2 game-opening advantage.

DePaul (14-8, 4-5 BIG EAST) fought back from the slow start as back-to-back jumpers by Caprice Smith cut the deficit to five points with four minutes until halftime. In the final four minutes, the two teams traded baskets as another Smith bucket made the halftime score 35-30 in favor of St. John's.

The second half was a constant game of catch-up as DePaul cut the St. John's lead to five points on three occasions, but could never get any closer. The Red Storm would answer each time and build the lead back to double-figures with the final knockout punch coming in the last six minutes of the game.

Following a Missy Mitidiero baseline lay-up with 5:56 left, Kia Wright and Monique McLean combined for the night's next 11 points. Following a McLean three-pointer with 3:14 on the clock, the Red Storm held a commanding 73-57 lead.

Smith led DePaul with 16 points and eight rebounds and was the only player to score in double-figures. Allie Quigley and Sam Quigley added eight points each while Erin Carney totaled 11 rebounds and seven points. Holly Medley also added seven points and four rebounds.

St. John's (7-12, 3-5 BIG EAST) was led by McLean's 20 points. She led four players in double-figures and was followed by Wright with 17, Angel Tate with 16 points and Tiina Sten with 14 points.
