Maurice Hubbard Gets Ready to Shine

WeAreDePaul.com checks in with Class of 2008 swingman Maurice "Mo" Hubbard in this report. Hubbard has put the wrap on his junior season at Westfield High in Chantilly, Virginia and looks forward to hitting the spring AAU circuit with Boo Williams. We hear which college recruiters have been tailing Hubbard this season.

Maurice Hubbard's junior year playing for the Westfield High Bulldogs was one of growth for him personally and for his team which finished with a record of 17-8. "We were a young team," said Hubbard. "Everybody was mostly juniors. We only had two seniors. All the juniors really never contributed before. So, this year was their first year contributing. They stepped up well and did a good job."

Mo Hubbard, a 6-6 forward, has displayed the ability to score inside and outside and has done a good job on the glass. "I averaged about 19 points, 10 or 11 rebounds, and about 5 assists," Hubbard related.

Mo caught the eye of a number of college recruiters on the AAU circuit last year and at the prestigious Reebok ABCD camp in Teaneck, New Jersey in July. Among the schools that Hubbard is hearing from are DePaul, Fordham, Richmond, St. Joseph's, and VCU. Fordham and St. Joes have offered scholarships to Hubbard.

Hubbard has begun plans to visit Division I schools. "I've already take an unofficial visit to VCU and St. Joes and I hope to make an official visit to all those schools during the summer," said Hubbard.

Hubbard closely followed VCU's stunning upset of Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament. "I had them winning in my bracket," Mo said. "I wasn't that surprised."

Maurice's father, Phil, is an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards of the NBA. Hubbard frequently gets advice on his game from Wizard's players like Gilbert Arenas.

One of Hubbard's favorite players while growing up was former DePaul Blue Demon Tyrone Corbin, who played with the Atlanta Hawks while his father was an assistant with the Hawks.

Look for Mo Hubbard to break out with Boo Williams once the spring AAU season begins in just a few weeks.
