Shurna to Play in Big 10

John Shurna is 6-8 forward in the class of 2008 from Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After visiting a Big 10 school this week, Shurna knows where he wants to attend college next year…

John Shurna plans on becoming a Northwestern Wildcat. "With the mixture of top notch academics and Big 10 basketball you can't really go wrong," said Shurna. "I really enjoyed the coaching staff. Coach (Bill) Carmody is a really good guy. I'm really excited about it."

Shurna chose to wear Northwestern purple over Army, Davidson, Loyola, and Washington State. He was also receiving interest from Nevada, Utah and Xavier.

Shurna will be reunited with cross-town rival Mike Capocci who is graduating from Glenbard East and is also headed to Evanston to play for the Wildcats. "I was on an unofficial yesterday and I was talking with him for awhile," said Shurna. "He's a good guy."

Shurna's stock has been on the rise in the last month after turning in terrific performances with the Illinois Wolves AAU team at the Pitt Jamfest, King James Shooting Stars Tournament in Akron, and the Hensley Memorial Run N' Slam tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Overall Shurna is pleased with his decision to be part of the Northwestern program. "The players themselves are great people." said John. "You can get along with all of them. It's a great group of guys, great coaching staff and great school. I think it was the best fit for me."
