Luka Mirkovic is a 6-11, 230 lb. big man that played for the Serbian junior national team last year. However, Mirkovic did not play for the U-18 Serbian team in Madrid, Spain in early August. Instead he was on a plane bound for the United States.
Mirkovic arrived at La Lumiere school in LaPorte, Indiana where he will play for Coach Delray Brooks this season. Luka has decided to suit up for Coach Jerry Wainwright's DePaul Blue Demons next year.
"He's a very skilled player," said Brooks. "He knows the game. He can shoot it."
Brooks sees Mirkovic fitting in very well at the next level. "I think that with going to DePaul and working with Coach Wainwright, he can be very good. He's going to get stronger. He's got to understand like most young kids do, that every possession counts. His work ethic is great. If he can understand and continue to work, I think he has a bright future ahead of him."
Mirkovic still has some things to work on to be productive at the next level. "He's got to get stronger," said Brooks. "He's got to play the team game better. He's near seven foot, he has to play like he's seven foot. He's got to dominate the glass, he's got to box out. He has to do the little things that a seven footer is expected to do and he'll be doing that by the time the season is over."
Mirkovic is versatile enough to play the center or forward positions. "Right now if he had to play at that level, he would be a four," Brooks said.
As a coach who led the U.S. U-19 team to the silver medal in Serbia this summer, Wainwright is familiar with international players. Wainwright's overseas experience was an important factor in Mirkovic's decision. "He verballed to DePaul," said Brooks. "DePaul has been recruiting him since he was overseas."
Mirkovic joins point guard Jeremiah Kelly in the Class of 2008 for the Blue Demons.
