With All-Pro Devin Hester running back punts and kickoff returns for the Chicago Bears, Devin Hill is about to become the second most popular person named Devin in the City of Chicago.
For 6-9 forward Devin Hill, the decision to attend DePaul University next fall was a matter of where he felt comfortable. "The city of Chicago was really nice," Hill said regarding his September 15th visit to the Lincoln Park campus. "I had never been there before, but it was really nice. The coaching staff was really good. (Associate Head Coach) Gary DeCesare, he coached at St. Raymond's (Bronx, NY) for twenty years, I was going to go there last year for high school. He coached my AAU coach (Emmanuel "Book" Richardson) there. I felt really comfortable with him. I met Coach Wainwright, everything was just good. Everything went really well on the in-home visit (on September 9th). I played with the guys and I liked all the guys. I just felt really comfortable with it."
Wainwright talked with Hill about Wilson Chandler, who was selected by the New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA Draft this year. Similar to Chandler, Hill's role with the DePaul team can expand to playing on the perimeter. "He told me to really focus in on my ballhandling and shooting and get those better and play the three full-time."
Hill's first exposure to DePaul was while watching the Blue Demons upset 5th ranked Kansas last December on ESPN. "That was before anything with DePaul happened to come up," Hill remarked. "I just happened to watch that game. I remember that they were good. I thought Wilson Chandler was really good. I thought that they had really good guards and Sammy Mejia looked really good in that game. I thought they'd get better later in the year and that's what they did."
Hill enjoyed scrimmaging with the DePaul team during his visit and feels that he can fit in with the team. "I thought they were really good," said Hill. "They have one big man back from last year (center Wesley Green). Their big man got a lot better this year. They have a great freshman in Mac Koshwal. I think he's really going to have a good year this year. With him down low and the guard Draelon (Burns), I think they are going to be really good this year. I definitely see myself fitting in there."
Devin also likes DePaul for the academic offerings. "I'm thinking of majoring in Business, but it's really up in the air," Hill said.
Hill looks forward to contributing next season and likes that point guard Jeremiah Kelly is on board for 2008. "I know that they have a commitment from a point guard that's at American Christian this year," Hill shared. "I've heard he's really good. I like that I can follow a point guard."
The city of Chicago appealed to Hill and added to his comfort level with the decision to attend DePaul. "Honestly I thought it was really clean," said Hill. "I thought it was really nice. I thought it would be like New York. There was a lot more green there than in New York."
Hill will have plenty of time to get to know the city of Chicago and DePaul fans during his next four years at the university.
