DePaul Opens Season With Blue Madness

On Friday night, the DePaul men's and women's basketball season got underway with the "Blue Madness" festivities. Coaches, players, students, and fans packed into DePaul's McGrath Arena to welcome in the new season.

It was a night for dancing and dunking in Lincoln Park as the Demon was released to open the season.

The 2007-08 men's and women's basketball teams were introduced to the crowd including some new faces. Jerry Wainwright's men's squad features six newcomers – freshmen Mike Bizoukas, Mac Koshwal, Kene Obi, Mario Stula, and Darquavis Tucker and junior college transfer Matija Poscic. Doug Bruno's women's team adds freshman Taylor Pikes from Chicago King and transfers Rachel Pierson and Elise Morrison.

DePaul also welcomed back old friends and new. Former Blue Demon and current Milwauee Buck Bobby Simmons was there. Alums Lorenzo Thompson and Marcus Heard watched on. The Blue Demons hosted some new friends as class of 2008 recruit Jeremiah Kelly was on campus for his official visit. Recent women's team commitment Courtney Webb from Benton Harbor, Michigan was in the house to see her future team.

Following warm-ups, the men's team conducted a slam dunk competition featuring a showdown between freshmen Koshwal and Tucker. Tucker won the contest and the judges' admiration while leaping over the 6-10 Koshwal for the final dunk.

The entertainment for the evening included the high flying performance of the Project Dunk acrobatic dunk team.

A lucky DePaul student walked away with $10,000 in free tuition from the university after winning a game of "Knockout" over nine of his classmates.

Several of the Demons took part in a "Dancing with the Stars" contest. Freshman Mario Stula looked debonnaire in a tuxedo while ballroom dancing. The judges were impressed with Allie Quigley wearing a rose while dancing with her partner. Will Walker added some latin flavor to the contest wearing a flamenco outfit while doing the cha-cha. Even coaches Bruno and Wainwright managed to get in on the contest. But, it was Ciara Johnson and her partner that took home the prize with their disco dance routine.

Students and fans took home T-shirts to remember the night by. While the basketball teams got to bed to prepare for Saturday's first real practices.
