The Perry Clark era has begun at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The former Tulane and Miami coach has taken over from Ronnie Arrow who moved on to South Alabama after he successfully took the Islanders to NCAA tournament last March.
Clark returns only four players from that team that won the Southland conference regular season and postseason championships. Yet they return the NCAA team's leading scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker in seven foot center Chris Daniels. Daniels averaged 15.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg and swatted 53 shots on the season. In the first round of the NCAA tournament, Daniels scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots in a loss to #2 seed Wisconsin. The big man is averaging 21.3 points through the first three games of this season.
DePaul senior Karron Clarke played for Perry Clark as a freshman at Miami. "He's a good coach," said Clarke. "We differed on a couple things. He's a great coach. He teaches you how to work hard. Every practice was intense. There were no rest periods. Everybody goes hard and everybody plays above the rim. He's a hard coach."
TAMU-CC assistant coach Billy Garrett made an instant impact for the Islanders by recruiting four players from the Chicago area. Garrett, who coached former Blue Demon LeVar Seals at Providence-St. Mel, has brought in former Chicago Simeon point guard and junior college transfer Tim Green. Green, who is starting for the Islanders and averaging 9.3 ppg, was a teammate of DePaul junior Matija Poscic at Highland Community College last season. Freshman forward Demond Watt from Thornton Fractional North and Chicago Leo guard Antonio Topps were also spring additions for the Islanders. Topps is battling back from an ankle injury. Garrett went to Gary, Indiana for 6-8 freshman forward Horace Bond. Bond was an AAU teammate of DePaul frosh Michael Bizoukas last year with the CAPS All-Stars. Bizoukas' Munster High team defeated Bond and Gary Westside in the Indiana High school playoffs the last two seasons.
The Islanders (1-2) have had two weeks off to prepare for this game.
The Blue Demons (1-2) may be shorthanded for this game. Sophomore Thijin Moses was dismissed from the team today. Junior college transfer Matija Poscic continues to be hampered by a hamstring injury and will be a game time decision. Even head coach Jerry Wainwright has been slowed down by a virus this week.
