DePaul Drops Big East Game at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A four-minute scoring drought in the second half allowed Marquette to build a double-digit lead as the Golden Eagles handed visiting DePaul a 65-56 defeat on Saturday. Allie Quigley led three players in double-figures with 16 points for the No. 23/22 Blue Demons.

DePaul jumped out quickly to a 13-4 lead behind three short jumpers by Natasha Williams and five points from Deirdre Naughton. Marquette answered with an 11-4 run and tied the game at 15-15 on a three-pointer by Tatiyiana McMorris with 7:25 left.

A basket by Quigley on DePaul's next possession was followed by a Marquette basket and three-pointer to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game with just over five minutes until halftime. The lead jumped to five points before DePaul (13-4, 2-2 BIG EAST) scored four of the final seven points of the half for a 29-25 score at intermission.

The two teams traded pairs of free throws in the opening possessions of the second period before back-to-back three-pointers by Marquette's Krystal Ellis and Janelle Harris gave the home team a 37-29 lead to force Doug Bruno to call a time out at 17:29.

Following a Marquette free throw, the Blue Demons reeled off eight straight points to put to within two at 38-36 when China Threatt converted a breakaway lay-up. However, DePaul went ice cold for nearly four minutes while the Golden Eagles took advantage to build a 10-point cushion that would get to no less than six over the final 10 minutes of the game.

Marquette (10-7, 2-2 BIG EAST) increased its lead to as many as 12 points on three occasions before settling with a nine-point advantage and a 65-56 final.

Quigley led the Blue Demons with 16 points while Williams added 12 points and nine rebounds. Naughton chipped in 11 points for DePaul and Taylor Pikes came off the bench for nine rebounds and four points. DePaul struggled from behind the arc hitting just one of their 16 three-point attempts.

Marquette was led by Ellis' 16 points and Angel Robinson added 13.

The Blue Demons travel to Notre Dame for a Tuesday night game at the Joyce Center. The game can be seen live on CSTV at 7 p.m. CT. DePaul returns to McGrath Arena next Saturday to face the Cincinnati Bearcats. Saturday's game opens the three-game homestand that concludes with a Jan. 29 game against Syracuse and a Feb. 2 contest against Villanova.
