Unsigned 2008 Point Guard Receives New Offers

Verdell Jones, one of the top unsigned point guards in the nation is nearing his college decision. The Champaign Central product has received new interest from Big East, Big Ten and Big 12 schools. Learn what new scholarship offers Jones has received and where he intends to visit before the spring signing period ends.

Champaign's Verdell Jones is setting up an official visit with Texas in the coming weeks and has just received recent offers from Georgetown and Indiana. Minnesota and Kentucky also remain high on Verdell's list.

"I'm looking to make my decision in the next three weeks," said Jones. "With some coaching changes and these new offers I'm going to have to think really hard."

Although Georgetown and Indiana are joining the game later than Minnesota, Kentucky, and Texas, Verdell remains interested in their programs.

"Both of those teams (Georgetown and Indiana) play in great conferences with top competition," said Jones. "I don't plan on making my decision until the spring signing period."

The offer from Indiana means new coach Tom Crean is already burning up the phone lines looking for recruits. "Coach Crean spoke with my Dad on the phone," said Jones.

Jones is also working hard to put on muscle before getting to school. "I've been in the weight room everyday trying to add strength," said Jones.

On the court, Verdell recently helped lead Champaign Central to a third place finish in the Illinois Class 3A State Tournament.

The senior also competed in the Chicago High School Classic last night where he helped lead the South team to a 129-119 victory. Jones had with 15 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, and finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. Verdell also was perfect from the three point line going 2-for-2, and hitting three out of four from the free throw line.
