Lavonte Dority, a six foot point guard, has made his mark on the AAU circuit this spring playing with Chicago Elite and Indiana Elite squads in both the 17-U and 16-U level of play.
Dority just returned to Chicago from the University of New Mexico's elite camp this weekend. "There was good competition down there," Dority said, after attending the camp for the second straight year. "They taught me well. There was a lot of stuff I picked up."
"I thought he was the best player there," said Chicago Elite head coach Sidney White. "He played pretty good."
Teamed with fellow sophomore Mike McCall in the backcourt both at Foreman and with Chicago Elite on the AAU circuit, Dority has been showcasing his skills. "I'm a great ballhandler," Lavonte said. "I have a real strong frame. I can shoot the mid-range jump shot consistently and I play real hard on defense."
The latest school to offer Dority is the reigning national champion from Kansas. "I've got an offer from Kansas," Dority said. "Coach (Bill) Self talked to my coaches."
Given the number of people who have compared Dority's game to current Jayhawk guard Sherron Collins, it really comes as no surprise that Kansas is interested. Dority noted the similarities between himself and Collins. "We're the same as far as the strength, handles, the toughness and being from Chicago."
Besides Kansas, Dority also has received scholarship offers from DePaul, Indiana, Iowa State, New Mexico, and Wisconsin. He is also receiving interest from Louisville, Purdue, Providence, Villanova and UNLV.
"Louisville is coming on," White remarked. "Kansas is coming alive. He still likes DePaul too."
"Basically I'm keeping my options open right now," Dority said.
Going forward, Dority has been invited to next week's NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp and plans on attending UNLV's elite camp the following weekend.
