The Lewis University Flyers come calling to McGrath Arena on Friday night for the Blue Demons first and only exhibition game this season.
Lewis is a Division II school from Romeoville, Illinois. The Flyers are coming off a 20-11 season last year where they received a NCAA tournament invitation.
The Flyers lost seven seniors from that team including center Stephen Bolt. Their leading returning scorer is senior forward Jason Genova who averaged 18 ppg last season. Genova was named a Division II Pre-Season Honorable Mention All-American by Street and Smith Magazine. Genova led all scorers with 20 points in Monday's 74-61 exhibition loss at Bradley.
Senior guard Brandon Dagans was named to the Division II Bulletin Preseason All-American Team. He averaged 16.7 ppg for the Flyers last season. Dagans recorded a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds in Monday's exhibition opener at Bradley.
Not to be overlooked is sophomore forward Lonnie Lawrence from Bloomington, who does all the little things to win games. Lawrence, who is ferocious on the glass, contributed with eight points and 10 rebounds at Bradley on Monday.
Lewis outrebounded Bradley by a 46-42 margin by outworking the Braves on the boards.
Other starters for the Flyers included freshman center Matt Toth and senior guard Mike Robinson.
The last time the Flyers came to McGrath Arena was two years ago. On November 5, 2006, the Blue Demons defeated first year coach Scott Trost's Flyers by a score of 77-70.
Junior forward Karron Clarke led the Blue Demons with 18 points. Sophomore Wilson Chandler managed seven points and 13 rebounds.
The Blue Demons had four players in double figures including Clarke, Wesley Green with 11, Sammy Mejia scored 16, and junior Draelon Burns contributed 11 points off the bench.
The Flyers were led by Dagans who led all scorers with 22 points in the contest.
The Blue Demons will open their regular season at McGrath Arena versus the Albany Great Danes on Monday, November 17th.
