DePaul Cools Southern U. in DPU Invitational

CHICAGO- Sometimes with victory there is disappointment. The DePaul Blue Demons women's basketball team advanced to the finals of the DePaul Invitational, but they will not play in the finals the team they had had their sights on since the tournament was first scheduled.

The Demons full court press forced eight turnovers in the game's first 4:30 and 27 overall in defeating the Southern University Jaguars 86-54 at McGrath Arena Friday night.

The Demons will face the University of Hartford in Saturday's final. The Hawks stunned #6 Duke 53-51 in the first game Friday night.

And while DePaul (3-1) was eying a match up with Duke, Demons' head coach Doug Bruno acknowledged the challenge that Hartford presents.

"We are really going to have to have our game on tomorrow," said Bruno. "(Hartford head coach) Rizzotti really knows how to coach the game."

DePaul was leading the Jaguars 28-16 with 6:25 left in the first half when they went on a 15-2 run to close out the half leading 43-18. They led by as many as 35 in the second half.

The Demons placed four players in double figures led by Deirdre Naughton's 15 points and five assists in 18 minutes of play. DePaul received 43 points from its bench with 10 each from Rachel Pierson and Erin Cattell.

"Tonight I thought our bench came off and did a real nice job," said Bruno.

Freshman Keisha Hampton continued her strong play for DePaul. Hampton, who was named to the All-Tournament team in the team's recent tournament in New Mexico, finished with 11 points and four rebounds.

Tenesha Brown led the Jaguars with 11 points. Southern shot 31% from the field for the game.

The Demons play Hartford Saturday night at 7:30 in the tournament's championship game.
