When we last saw the UDM Titans in December, the Blue Demons were walking out of Calihan Hall with a 70-64 victory. Perry Watson, the Titans coach at the time, has since been replaced with Ray McCallum. McCallum was an assistant at Indiana during Kelvin Sampson's reign of NCAA violations, yet McCallum was not named in the NCAA's ruling on the violations at Indiana today. DePaul fans will remember McCallum as the head coach at Houston before the Blue Demons left Conference USA for the Big East. Before that he was the head coach at Ball State.
The Titans are coming off a season where they finished 7-23 overall and dead last in the Horizon League (3-13).
Detroit has been picked to finish ninth in the Horizon League this season.
The Titans return six players from that team along with a number of new faces. One of those is junior college transfer Thomas Kennedy, who is leading the Titans in scoring at 12.3 ppg.
Detroit features a Chicago connection. One of those new faces is former Curie High guard Donavan Foster. The sharpshooting freshman guard, who had hernia surgery just two weeks before the start of the season, has started in two of the Titan's three games and is averaging nine ppg.
Former Mt. Carmel forward Chris Hayes dropped 14 points on DePaul last year. Hayes has struggled so far this season, averaging just three ppg and 15 minutes of play per game.
The Titans had hoped to have Indiana transfer Eli Holman eligible for this season, but his transfer waiver request was recently denied by the NCAA.
Detroit opened their season with a 82-50 loss at Purdue. They followed that up with a 71-58 loss at Western Michigan. The Titans earned their first victory of the McCallum era in their home opener against Eastern Michigan, as they cruised to a 62-47 win.
The Blue Demons have finished up final exams and are on winter break until early January. With exams behind them, they have nothing but basketball to focus on for the next month.
The Last Time
On December 30, 2007, the Blue Demons escaped Calihan Hall in Detroit with a 70-64 win over the Titans. Senior guard Draelon Burns scored 19 points and Dar Tucker returned to his home state and tossed in 18 to help DePaul hold off a late Detroit rally.
Freshman forward Mac Koshwal finished with 16 points for the Demons while Tucker grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Jon Goode scored 25 points for the Titans. Chris Hayes contributed with 14 points and eight rebounds.
