The Blue Demons are coming off an embarrassing 63-36 loss at Northwestern where they were without the services of big man Mac Koshwal. Koshwal remains day-to-day and will likely be a game-time decision on Wednesday night.
What will be the Blue Demons response to the shellacking that they took at Welsh-Ryan Arena? Will they be resilient and quickly shake off the loss? Or will they be like past DePaul teams that have let a loss like that linger? These questions will be answered on Wednesday night.
The Morgan State Bears are 3-6 and are coming off a 62-48 win over Coppin State. The Bears have also defeated Marshall and Maryland-Baltimore County. They did have one close loss (78-70) at Ole Miss and were dominated in a neutral court game versus Utah (66-37).
The Bears finished 22-11 and 14-2 in the MEAC last season, but lost three starters from that team.
Morgan State is led by former California coach Todd Bozeman. Bozeman led Cal to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in the early 90's with the help of a point guard named Jason Kidd. Bozeman was given an eight year "show-cause" ban from coaching in the college ranks by the NCAA after he admitted paying $30,000 to the parents of point guard Jelani Gardner. Morgan State hired Bozeman after a 10 year absence from college coaching.
Controversy has followed Bozeman to Morgan State. In 2007, he was charged with misdemeanor assault after an argument over ham sandwiches with a restaurant employee in Farmville, Virginia.
The Bears are led by senior forward Marquise Kately and junior guard Reggie Holmes. Kately is averaging 9.4 pppg and a team-high 6.2 rpg. Holmes, who is the first man off the bench, leads Morgan State in scoring at 12.9 ppg. In the Coppin State win, Holmes scored 19 points. Senior guard Roger Barnes chipped in with 12, while forward Kevin Thompson recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Morgan State was ranked higher than DePaul in the pre-season by CollegeHoopsNet.com where the Bears were ranked 126th in the country.
