DePaul Trounces Alcorn State 90-67

The Blue Demons wrapped up their non-conference slate with a 90-67 domination of the Alcorn State Braves on Sunday afternoon at Allstate Arena. DePaul had their highest offensive output of the season. Learn more about the game in this detailed report…

With no starter taller than 6-7 on the Alcorn State team, DePaul (8-5) took advantage of their size on the inside as they dominated the boards by a 56 to 32 gap.

"Coach is stressing rebounds," said sophomore forward Mac Koshwal. "Rebound, rebound, rebound, that's all he talks about. We've got to cherish the rebounds. Especially the offensive boards."

"We've been doing a little bit better job, especially on the offensive boards," said DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright. "Of course, sometimes when you're getting a lot of offensive rebounds that means you're not shooting it real well. I'd still like us to finish a little bit better around the basket. We need to play with a little more strength. We're really concentrating on those things and we've started to show it."

Dar Tucker led the Blue Demons with 25 points in 22 minutes despite battling the flu up until tip-off. Wainwright had penciled in Mario Stula to start in place of Tucker until Dar decided to give it a go. "Dar Tucker started feeling bad at the end of practice (on Saturday)," Wainwright said. "It worsened last night. We weren't real sure he would play."

"He didn't go to our meeting last night, he was in bed," Wainwright added. "He had been vomiting. He couldn't eat dinner last night."

"He got up this morning, he didn't eat," Jerry said. "I honestly didn't think he was going to play."

The Blue Demons had four players in double-figures. Mac Koshwal scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double. "Without question, our steadiest player has been Mac Koshwal," Wainwright remarked. "He's playing with a lot of confidence. He's been very vocal. He's been a good leader."

Senior guard Jabari Currie scored 12 points, dished out three assists, and corralled four rebounds. "The speed of Jabari Currie's game has really helped us," Wainwright said. "He's really been in attack mode."

Freshman forward Devin Hill continued to show improvement in this game. "Devin has got a chance to be a really special player," Wainwright said. "He's long. He's got a great feel for offensive basketball. This is the fist time he's played at this level. He's a great student and an all-time great kid. His passing has really improved. His rebounding has really improved."

DePaul's dominance on the glass ironically came against first-year Alcorn State coach Larry Smith. Smith who played in the NBA for Golden State, Houston, and San Antonio was nicknamed "Mr. Mean" for his rebounding style.

The Braves finished with three players in double-figures. Alcorn State sharpshooter Troy Jackson led all scorers with 31 points. "He's been consistent for us all year long," said Smith.

The Blue Demons finish the non-conference season at 8-5. Tucker looked back on non-conference play as DePaul now heads into Big East conference play with Notre Dame coming to town on New Year's Eve. "I think we did good for a young team," said Tucker. "For a lot of new players that haven't been playing with each other, I think we did good. There were some games that we could have won and we should have. That's in the past now, we can't think about that. We've got to think about what's in front of us and try to get wins in the future."

"I think we've improved steadily over the last month," said Jerry. "Hopefully we'll be able to carry it into Wednesday night. As I told the kids, now we have 18 great games. Every one of them is going to be intense. Every one of them there is a lot on the line.

"We're about as ready as we can be to play in the Big East and we're excited about starting our season."
