The Blue Demons are desperate for a Big East win and are hungry to steal one on the road at USF on Tuesday night. After an embarrassing 22 point loss to South Florida just 10 days ago, the Blue Demons would like to prove that they aren't the same team they were in that game.
Since the USF loss, the Demons' main focus has been on defense. They have watched all of the defensive miscues on video from the first matchup and have focused primarily on defense in practice for the last week.
The Blue Demons gave up 80 points to a USF team that came in to the game dead last in the Big East in Scoring Offense (61 ppg).
One of DePaul's focuses will have to be on USF's perimeter shooting. In the first meeting, the Bulls shot 41.2% from behind the arc. The guy that DePaul has to stop is super soph Dominique Jones, who shot five of 10 from three point territory in that game. Jones has been on a tear lately after he scored 35 points at West Virginia on Saturday.
DePaul also has to get better on the glass. They've been dominated on the boards in the last two games. Cincinnati owned a 36-24 rebounding advantage over DePaul, while USF gained a 40-22 lead on the boards. The Demons have been particularly poor on the offensive boards leading to very few second chance scoring opportunities.
The win over DePaul a week and a half ago gave the Bulls a new-found confidence in their game. After earning their first Big East win over the Demons, USF has lost by 13 on the road at top-ranked Pittsburgh and by three at West Virginia on Saturday.
Gus Gilchrist, a transfer from Maryland who originally committed to Virginia Tech, has come on of late after a slow start to his debut at USF. Gus posted a career-high 22 points in the loss at Pittsburgh.
Needless to say, the Blue Demons need to bring a A+ defensive effort on Tuesday night if they hope to exact some revenge on USF in this rematch.
The Last Time
Just 10 days ago the Bulls came in to Allstate Arena and handed the Blue Demons a 80-58 defeat. South Florida dominated DePaul from three point range and on rebounding as they shot 41.2 percent from behind the arc to 15.4% for DePaul. The Bulls outmuscled DePaul for loose balls and rebounds for a margin of 40-22.
The Bulls featured four players in double-figures. USF guard Dominique Jones led all scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds. Jesus Verdejo contributed 18 points and eight rebounds. Transfer Gus Gilchrist scored a career high 16 points for the Bulls. While guard Chris Howard chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.
Sophomore forward Mac Koshwal led the way for DePaul with 18 points on seven of 11 shooting and eight rebounds. Senior guard Jabari Currie (11 points) and junior guard Will Walker (17 points) also finished in double-figures. USF held DePaul's leading scorer Dar Tucker to eight points on four of 11 shooting.
