Four UConn (19-1, 8-1) players reached double-figures. Guard Jerome Dyson scored 18 points to lead the Huskies as he broke the 1,000 point scoring plateau for his career. Jeff Adrien and A.J. Price scored 12 points apiece, while big man Hasheem Thabeet chipped in with 11 points
For Adrien it was his 43rd career double-double as he grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Blue Demons trailed 41-35 at halftime, but managed only 14 points in the second stanza as UConn smothered DePaul (8-13, 0-8) with their defense.
"They're a very physical team," said DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright. "We had hoped to shoot more than nine free throws in this game.
The Huskies held DePaul's Mac Koshwal to just six points on three of 10 shooting and five rebounds. The Demons shot 24% from the field in the second half after shooting 50% in the first half.
Dar Tucker led all scorers with 20 points and shot eight of 18 from the field. Tucker spent time on the bench in the first half after picking up two early fouls.
Will Walker also reached double-figures for DePaul with 12 points on six of 15 shooting.
DePaul has gotten into a habit of being bad on the boards in Big East play. Tonight was no exception. The Blue Demons were outrebounded by a 41-29 margin.
UConn coach Jim Calhoun took time to praise DePaul sophomores Koshwal and Tucker.
"Both of them have terrific futures," said Calhoun. "They're two kids who are going to be great players, not good players.
"I happen to be in love with those two kids," Calhoun remarked. "I think they're going to be terrific players."
"I think they are only in need of point guard help and maturity," Calhoun said of what the Blue Demons need most right now.
With Duke losing 70-68 at Wake Forest tonight, the Huskies can now move up to the #1 spot in the polls with a win over Providence this weekend.
