"We are excited about all three of these November signees," Bruno said. "While at DePaul we always work to sign the best players in the Chicago Area as our #1 priority as evidenced by signing Uniquah Hampton from Hillcrest.
"Yet when our local talent exercises their right to leave our great city, we will not hesitate to recruit from anywhere in the country." "Both Jasmine Penny and Shukurah Washington are examples of our having to 'Take it to the Road'."
"Playing in the BIG EAST Conference has really helped us. It is unbelievable how well received DePaul has been in the New York, New Jersey, Philly and DC areas. All three of these players are BIG EAST level players and the BIG EAST is the best basketball league in the country."
Hampton is a four-year starter at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Illinois has been named all South Suburban All-Conference three times, while she garnered the league's MVP honors as a sophomore and junior.
"Uniquah is our first signee from Hillcrest High School since Assistant Coach Candis Blankson chose DePaul," Bruno said. "Uniquah verbally committed to DePaul in her sophomore year and brings great athleticism and skill to our backcourt.
"Because Uniquah did not play on the AAU summer circuit the last couple of years, she is somewhat under the radar. With a great senior year she could earn the recognition as one of the best players in the country."
Playing under John Maniatis at Hillcrest and for the Illinois Hustle's Derrill Kipp, Hampton, a 6-0 guard, has earn All-State and All-Area honors by the Chicago Tribune, Southtown Star, Champaign News Gazette, Chicago Sun-Times and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
Penny a 6-1 forward, is one of the most highly touted players to come out of the state of Indiana. A two-time AP Indiana All-State Girl's Basketball Team Honorable Mention, Penny was named A Hoosier Magazine All-State first team selection as a sophomore and junior. A senior at Logansport High School, Penny is a 2010 Indiana All-Star and a Indiana Miss Basketball Candidate.
"Jasmine Penny is one of the best players in the state of Indiana," Bruno said. "Jasmine will bring great athleticism to campus and is an excellent rebounder, defender and shooter. Jasmine is also the total package in that she is an honor student that will help carry on DePaul's tradition of striving for success --both on the court and in the classroom.
"Logansport High School Coach Jerry Hoover has been coaching men and woman; boys and girls for more than 40 years and calls Jasmine Penny 'one of the best he has ever coached'."
DePaul's final signee, Shukurah Washington hails from Murry Bergtraum -- a high school that has won 11 straight New York City Championships. Murry Bergtraum is currently on a 53-game winning streak and closed out the 2008-09 season ranked No. 1 in ESPN's High Elite 25 High School Girls Basketball Rankings.
"Shukurah Washington is a unique New York player that is just what you call a flat out 'baller,'" Bruno said. "Shukurah defies being pigeonholed into any single position on the floor as she can just flat out play.
"This was most clearly evidenced by (Shukurah Washington) leading her team to the City Championship game in Madison Square Garden and being named MVP of this most prestigious New York City High School Game."
"Shukurah Washington is so unique because of her ability to rebound, play with power and still also play any of the guard positions. She reminds me of former DePaul Standout, Latasha Byears."
"Murry Bergtraum is led by Coach Ed Grezinski who has produced many great players including most recently Rutgers' Epiphany Prince and Tennessee's Shannon Bobbit. Shukurah played last summer for the Ring City AAU Program led by Walter Welsh. Previous to her Ring City affiliation, Shukurah played for New Heights and Coach Mervin Rosa."
DePaul returns to the court this weekend when it hosts the Maggie Dixon Classic Nov. 20-21 at McGrath Arena. The Blue Demons welcome Tennessee State, San Diego and Cornell for the two-day tournament.
