Game Preview

During the second half of DePaul's 57-53 loss to Tennessee on Sunday night, a maintenance worker attempted to repair DePaul's basket with duct tape. When it comes to DePaul's defense, there hasn't been any such duct tape or band-aid type approach.

Instead DePaul Coach Jerry Wainwright has tore down his team and built his defense back up from scratch. Last season, the Blue Demons's defense was porous. DePaul gave up an average of 72.4 points and had a defensive field goal percentage of 45.9%.

Through three games, DePaul (2-1) has held opponents to 54 ppg and has a defensive field goal percentage of 37.1%.

On Monday night, DePaul's defense will be tested again against the St. Joes Hawks (3-1). While their offense isn't as high-octane as Tennessee's, St. Joes likes to get out in transition. If there is an open look in transition, they will take the shot immediately.

The Hawks are a very perimeter-oriented squad, but lack an interior presence. After being dominated on the boards by Tennessee, it's important that the Demons get after the rebounds in this game.

St. Joes is led by senior guard Garrett Williamson. In the Hawks 84-80 win over Boston College in the opening round of the Paradise Jam, Williamson scored 18 points.

Senior guard Darrin Govens scored 23 points in the Hawks' 77-67 overtime win over Drexel. In the second half of the Boston College win, he hit three of his game-high four 3-pointers in a span of six minutes. Govens leads the team with 15 3-pointers made this season.

Freshman guard Carl Jones was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week this week after averaging averaged 17.5 points in wins over Holy Cross and Boston College.

Also scoring in double-figures for the Hawks is junior forward Idris Hilliard at 11.3 ppg. Hilliard was once recruited by the Blue Demons.

The Series: The last time DePaul met St. Joes, the Hawks prevailed in a 65-62 win over the Blue Demons on December 21st, 2002 in Philadelphia.

Of course the most memorable game between the two schools was played on March 14, 1981 in the NCAA Second Round in Dayton. It was one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history as the Hawks defeated #1 ranked DePaul, 49-48.
