Game Preview

The Blue Demons (6-3) welcome the Eagles of American University (1-8) to Allstate Arena on Wednesday night. DePaul has already faced an opponent from the halls of higher learning in Ivy League opponent Columbia and now face the first Patriot League opponent of the non-conference season.

The Eagles are led by former Virginia coach Jeff Jones who is in his 10th year at the helm at AU. Jones took the Eagles to the NCAA tournament the last two seasons. In the first round of the 2009 tournament in Philadelphia, American led eventual Final Four participant Villanova by as much as 14 in the second half before succumbing to the Wildcats 80-67.

However, American has lost all five starters from last year's squad and they have already lost more games than they did all of last season. It's pretty safe to say that this is a rebuilding year for Jones in the nation's capitol.

American's lone victory was a 59-53 win at home against Howard University.

The Eagles have had plenty of time to prepare for this game and have been off since getting blown out 73-46 by Georgetown on December 5th.

This game is shaping up to be another low scoring affair as AU has been keeping it in the 50's and 60's.

American's leading scorer and rebounder is sophomore forward Stephen Lumpkins who is averaging 12.6 ppg and eight rebounds per game.

Wednesday marks the debut of transfer Vlad Moldoveanu for the Eagles. Moldoveanu, a Romanian who is now eligible after transferring from George Mason, has been described by Jones as the team's best shooter and best post player.

Moldoveanu led the Romanian national team in scoring during the 2009 FIBA EuroBasket Qualifying Tournament during the summer. He averaged 18.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

DePaul point guard Mike Bizoukas will be facing Steve Luptak, one of his former Munster High teammates.

The Last Time

The last time DePaul met American on the basketball court, it was at DePaul's Alumni Hall on the Lincoln Park campus on December 11, 1991. The Demons prevailed 106-80.
