DePaul Falls to St. John's

CHICAGO- It was Red beating Blue Saturday night at McGrath Arena.

Led by Kelly McManmon's 15 points, the visiting St. John's Red Storm defeated the DePaul Blue Demons 68-51.

DePaul, which led only once in the game at 6-5, struggled early offensively against the Red Storm's 2-3 half court zone, but managed to close to 29-25 on a three-point play by Sam Quigley with 3:29 left in the first half. The Demons went in to the locker room trailing 33-28.

McManmon, averaging 6.0 ppg coming into the contest, was 3-4 from behind the arc in the first half.

Opening the second half with a steal, layup, and a three-pointer the Red Storm pushed its lead to 38-28 in the opening minute.

DePaul (12-6, 1-3 Big East) then started chipping away at the deficit. A lay up by Felicia Chester off an inbounds play with 13:54 left pulled the Demons to 41-39, but four points by St. John's in the next 40 seconds helped shift momentum back to the visiting team.

"I thought we did a great job defensively [when DePaul made its run]." St. John's coach Kim Barnes-Arico said. "We made some big plays and took some charges. [DePaul] was beating us on the boards pretty early and I thought we controlled that. We also did a nice job of moving the ball on offense and getting the hot people the ball."

Quigley led DePaul with 14 points and Keisha Hampton added 10 points.

St. John's improves to 15-3, 3-2 in the Big East.

The Blue Demons travel to Seton Hall for a game this Tuesday and play the following Saturday at Georgetown. DePaul returns home on January 27 to face Cincinnati.

Notes: DePaul now leads the series 3-2...Quigley is 2nd in the Big East in assists with 6.8 per game.
