DePaul freshman Katherine Harry's 15 points and 18 rebounds paced five Blue Demons in double-figure scoring as DePaul beat the Cincinnati Bearcats 71-63 Wednesday night at McGrath Arena.
Harry, a product of Columbia, Missouri, dominated inside in the second half to help DePaul overcome a sluggish first half.
The Bearcats jumped out to an 8-2 lead before a Felicia Chester (11 points) putback gave DePaul an 11-8 lead. The Blue Demons took a 35-29 lead into the break.
A twisting baseline layup ending in a three point play by Anna Martin (11 points) at 16:46 of the second half put the Blue Demons up 40-36. A steal at half court by Harry off 1-2-2 full court zone pressure by DePaul led to a layup and foul and her three point play stretched the lead to 45-36.
Harry scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the second half.
"[In the second half] I was attacking the offensive glass and our team was doing a great job of getting the ball inside," Harry said. "You have to take what comes, and in the second half our inside game was really [working]."
A jumper by Keisha Hampton (10 points) pushed DePaul's lead to 65-52 with 7:26 left in the contest.
DePaul (14-7, 3-4 Big East) had played 12 of its last 16 games on the road. The comforts of home were not lost on the Blue Demons.
"I like playing at McGrath Arena a lot," Harry said. "It's one of the reasons I chose to come here. We have a tight gym and we get a lot of fan support from the community and the student section."
Sam Quigley added 16 points for DePaul.
The Bearcats (9-10, 2-5) were led by Kahla Roudenbush's 16 points.
The Blue Demons and Cincinnati had been tied for seventh place in the Big East.
"There are certain places and times in a season when you just plain have to get a win, and this was one of them," DePaul coach Doug Bruno said.
DePaul looks to continue its winning ways this Sunday at home against Marquette at 3:00 p.m. CST. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
Notes: DePaul leads the series 22-12.... Quigley now has recorded an assist in 51 straight games.
