DeLaSalle forward Mike Shaw has been recruited by high-major colleges since he was in the eighth grade playing with Mac Irvin Fire AAU program. Shaw was on a team filled with players who were much older than he was.
Three years later and Shaw is much older and wiser. Mike has learned a lot. He and his family are now savvy to the recruiting process.
At ATTACK Athletics on Chicago's west side on Tuesday, Shaw offered up some advice to those that are new to the recruiting game.
"Don't let it get to your head," Mike said. "Keep working hard. Weigh your options first. Don't jump the gun and make a decision. You have to weigh your options and see what's best for you. See where you're comfortable."
Shaw has obviously followed his own advice and has been patient with the recruiting process.
"I'm taking my time," Mike said. "I'm not really rushing it."
He doesn't plan on narrowing his lengthy list of schools in the next few weeks.
"After the July period, when the coaches can come out, I'll start narrowing down then," said Shaw. "If you ask me a month from now, I'll be able to tell you."
Shaw declined to list schools, but did say that he's had new interest from UNLV and West Virginia recently.
"I don't want to list schools, I might leave somebody out," said Mike. "I just keep playing. When it's time for me to shut it down and figure out where I'm trying to go that's what I'm going to do."
Shaw has been recruited by DePaul for quite some time and has had interest in the Blue Demons both under Jerry Wainwright's tenure and with new coach Oliver Purnell. Mike attended DePaul's Blue Madness event back in October of last year. The Blue Demons figure prominently in Shaw's plans.
"I like what they're trying to do," Shaw said. "They're doing big things. There are a bunch of guys talking about doing this. DePaul is definitely one of my top schools. They're bringing in coaches who have history. Coach Purnell was with the USA team and all that."
Not only is Purnell and his staff recruiting Shaw, he has Mac Irvin Fire teammate Jamie Crockett in his ear too. Crockett, a 2011 wing from Crete-Monee, verbally committed to the Blue Demons last month.
"Jamie texted me the day before saying ‘what you're trying to do?'," said Shaw. "I tell him I'm taking my time, good luck to you, that's a good fit for you. Every time I see him he's saying something."
Shaw, who is ranked as the 10th best power forward in the Class of 2011 by Scout.com, recently attended the NBPA Top 100 camp in Charlottesville, Virginia. Shaw measured in at 6-8 without shoes, has a 6'10" wingspan, a 8'7" reach and weighed in at 220 lbs.
At NBPA Camp, Shaw was a solid presence on the boards with his rebounding skills.
He followed that performance up by leading DeLaSalle Institute to the final eight of the DePaul Team Camp on Monday and Tuesday. Shaw enjoyed himself at the camp.
"I like it," said Shaw. "I tell you, we're playing well. We're getting some runs in together and we're winning. It's real competitive, everybody brings it."
The Meteors recently got wing Andre Henley back after spending a year at prep school. Nobody was happier to see Henley back than Shaw was.
"Definitely, Dre brings a lot to the table," said Mike. "He's another scorer. He's going to rebound. He brings size. I love playing with Dre."
With Henley back in the lineup, DeLaSalle is expected to be one of the top ranked teams in the state this season.
"It's expected," said Shaw. "We had a pretty good season last year without Dre. With Dre back, everybody's gonna be ready. We can't let rankings get to us. We just have to keep playing and not worry. It's about who's on top at the end of the season."
