Mike Shaw Visits with DePaul's Oliver Purnell

DePaul men's basketball coach Oliver Purnell scored a major coup this week. Fresh off of hosting a visit with fifth ranked big man Anthony Davis on Monday, Purnell received a visit from DeLaSalle forward Mike Shaw on Tuesday. Learn what the 6-9, 220 lb. forward has to say about his visit to Lincoln Park in this report…

Mike Shaw has had a solid summer on the AAU circuit with the Mac Irvin Fire. At the End of Season Showdown in Merrillville, Indiana last weekend, Scout.com's 13th ranked power forward for 2011 demonstrated that he can rebound with the best of them and was a beast on the boards.

Shaw followed that performance up with a trip to Lincoln Park today. Shaw had been on campus before, but this was his first time to talk with new Blue Demons skipper Oliver Purnell.

"It was cool," said Shaw. "I liked it. I got a chance to sit down and talk to the coaches and see their style of play. I can really fit in with Coach Purnell's style of play. That's how I like to play. I like to get up and down and press on defense. It's my style of play. I liked it a lot. It was a great experience."

Shaw toured DePaul's athletic facilities and the campus today.

"We talked with the coaches and checked out the dorms," Mike said. "I checked out the academic stuff and talked to some people at the school."

If Shaw were to come to DePaul, he would be reunited with AAU teammate Jamie Crockett from Crete-Monee. In Merrillville on Friday, Crockett and Shaw helped make up the bulk of the scoring for the Mac Irvin Fire.

"I love playing with Jamie Crockett," said Shaw. "I've got to say Jamie Crockett runs the floor, he's a great player and is real cool off the court."

While Shaw was on campus, former Blue Demon great and NBA star Quentin Richardson was running his youth camp in the school's gym, Shaw looked in on the camp, but didn't meet with Richardson.

"He was kind of busy running his camp," said Shaw. "I've met him before, but didn't talk to him today."

DePaul is the one school that Anthony Davis and Shaw have in common on their school lists, could the two of them team up as freshmen in Lincoln Park in 2011?

"I love Anthony Davis, if he decides to go there, that would be great," said Mike. "I'd love to play with him."

Before Shaw reaches a decision he may look in on some other universities.

"I want to go check out Marquette, Michigan State, Illinois, and probably some other schools," Mike said.

Overall, Shaw liked his visit and plans on a return.

"I'm going to check it out again," Shaw said. "I enjoyed it a lot. DePaul's a great place."

This has been an exciting week for DePaul recruiting and it's just getting started. Stay tuned to WeAreDePaul.com for the very latest.
