Top Flight West Coast OL Has An Offer

One of the West Coast's top offensive lineman has secured an early offer from the Blue Devils as well as several other programs. So where does Duke stand with this big time prospect? TDD investigates.

"I have offers from California, Stanford, Duke, SMU, and Washington," said San Clemente (Calif.) High standout Kyle Murphy. "I am being recruited by USC, Oregon State, Oregon, Arizona, Boise State, and San Diego State as well."

Murphy, who measures out at 6-foot-7 and 275 pounds, reports impressive weight room numbers of 335 pounds on the bench press, 420 on squat, and 295 on power clean. As a junior he earned First Team All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State honors while playing both offensive and defensive line. However, once he enrolls at the next level his focus will be solely on playing offensive tackle.

So what makes Murphy such a highly touted prospect?

"I get off the ball fast and hard which helps me overpower kids on run blocking, and I also finish my blocks. On pass blocking I'm athletic and flexible and also blessed with long arms. I need to perfect my technique and continue to get stronger. Coaches have told me they notice my athletic build which is unique for my size."

At such an early point in the recruiting process, Murphy denies a favorite though he does have an idea of what he's looking for and is looking forward to taking several visits to refine that wish list.

"I'm looking for a school that I can fit in the best athletically with the football program, staff and players while fulfilling my academic needs. Right now I'm planning on going to Stanford in late February and Cal in early March for their Junior Days. Hopefully during Spring Break in April, I will be able to take some visits, but I'll have to plan that with my parents. I would like to visit the schools who have offered me so I can get a feel in person for the schools. If the camp schedules work with my high school calendar, I hope to attend some of those as well."

Duke is one of those schools who came in early with an offer and Murphy says he's made an effort to learn more and more about the Blue Devil program.

"Duke offered my in early September and the coaches have continued to send letters. Once in a while I'll call them to check in. I know that Duke has a terrific academic program and have heard they are a building football program that will be on the rise."

"Their main pitches to me are the chance for early playing time, the chance to get a world class education, the location of the school, and that they are building new facilities. Mainly they feel that I could come into Duke and find success on and off the field."

Murphy has earned a very early three star rating from Scout.com.
