California Prospect Has Duke Offer

The Blue Devil recruiting efforts in 2012 have expanded significantly as Coach Cutcliffe and staff look to be extremely selective with limited numbers. One prospect to show up on the board hails from the West Coast and was offered very early.

"I play offensive tackle and defensive end for my school," said Santa Margarita (Calif.) standout Max Tuerk. "I currently have scholarship offers from Duke, SMU, and Washington. My main position is offensive tackle, and I've kind of picked up defensive end as a secondary position."

Measuring out at 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds, Tuerk has the look of a high major offensive lineman. He's also got the weight room numbers to back it up.

"My max on the bench press is 375 pounds. My squat max is 475, and my power clean is 295. I'm not sure about a best forty time at this point, but the last time I ran it I had a 5.1."

During his junior season Tuerk's team went 9-3 and lost in the second round of the playoffs. For his part, Tuerk spent most of his time on the offensive line, but did manage a couple of snaps per drive on the outside of the defensive line where he finished with 20 tackles and three sacks. It resulted in a number of post season honors including League Most Valuable Lineman, 1st Team All-County, 1st Team All-CIF, 2nd Team All-State, and placement on the Los Angeles Times' All-Star team.

Aside from measurables, what does Tuerk credit his success to?

"As a player my strengths are definitely my speed, my technique, and my aggressiveness. Coaches have told me they notice those things and my dedication in the weightroom and classroom. I believe in having a strong work ethic."

"I know I need to continue to work hard, specifically on my leg strength and staying lower."

Earlier this year Tuerk caught the Duke coaching staff's eye and the interest began to show on the Blue Devils' part.

"Duke offered me in January and Coach Lubick has been recruiting me for some time. He and Coach Cutcliffe came to my school and I have a good relationship with both of them. When they made the offer it was great. I really like Duke and what the program has to offer. I am beginning to form relationships with all the coaches, which is big for me and in my decision."

"I would have to say their major pitch is that Duke has an amazing campus and top of the line academics. They also have a great coaching staff which has made big strides already."

In addition to the offer from Cutcliffe and company, Tuerk has picked up offers from SMU and Washington. He has yet to take any visits, but says plans are in the work to visit all three schools who have offered this summer. And while he claims no leaders, he does have a criteria of factors that'll factor into his decision.

"I am looking for a great program that will fit me in terms of having great academics, great football, and a great relationship with the players and coaches on the team."
