Three Star TE Ready For Duke Camp

One of Ohio's top tight end talents says he's very impressed with Duke's commitment to recruiting him and he's impressed with the Blue Devil coaching staff after visiting for March's junior day.

"I visited Duke in March for Junior Day," said Lexingston (Ohio) three star tight end Tanner Kearns "I immediately went into the Tight End meeting with Coach Mid and found their scheme, and his coaching style a good fit I was not aware about all the expansion plans though The new field house and stadium renovation, that will be impressive "

And it appears that Kearns could be described similarly by the Duke coaching staff At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Kearns has early offers from some smaller schools such as Toledo, Central Michigan, and Kent State And he's looking for more

"I'd like to hear more from Duke, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Iowa, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Indiana, Arkansas, LSU, and Syracuse Each of those schools have encouraged me to visit this summer for their camps They are looking to see if I've added the needed weight from my junior year, and I've done that "

Each of those schools have made an effort to reach out to Kearns in their own way with several programs beginning to stick out

"I'd say Duke, LSU, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Arkansas, and Indiana have been in contact the most With Duke I have called Coach Middleton several times and we are setting up various visits "

"With camps, you have to have a well rounded approach They are individual events where you get compared against other recruits, and you have to do your best in front of those coaches Our high school coach has taken us to various camps over the past two years We do learn things from the camps, and our coaching staff will work to pick up different drills I will spend the early part of the summer working on my game, but come July I will start focusing on my senior team instead of just me "

So what is Kearns looking to improve upon while at these camps and during his individual improvement period?

"My route running and receiving technique are pretty good I also feel I make good contact and drive block very well But I'd like to do better in zone blocking schemes, getting out to block the linebacker for example I'm running track this spring to further develop my speed and I'm also keeping a regular lifting schedule "

Kearns believes his handling the recruiting process and its various demands as well as he can And he credits some close relationships for that ability

"My high school coach is my rock He is great at networking and gives me great advice My parents are also very supportive, and don't mind driving all weekend to allow me to attend junior days For example, to visit Duke we drove all night after I finished a Friday basketball game There are guys I get to see on a regular basis, other recruits, so it's not a pain to attend the various events at all "

"As far as a philosophy or approach goes, I'd say I've enjoyed it all so far, and I expect it to evolve in the same way The relationships I have made so far have been great and the coaches really seem to enjoy their positions and I enjoy speaking to them "

For Duke that means a relationship with assistants Ron Middleton and Matt Luke

"I have kept in good contact with Coach Middleton through mail and phone calls He's expressed his interest, but wants to see me on the field at camp to further evaluate things I hope a Duke offer is going to come after I camp with them The coaches there really use the camp as an evaluation tool and I'm looking forward to June "

"My head recruiting coach is Coach Luke He really did a great job of conveying their interest at junior day and he's got an impressive personality He's told me the program is making an investment in football and I believe it I also believe they will be competitive in the ACC and start to be a yearly bowl team They have an experienced coaching staff and their players believe "

With the summer camps and visit likely to be huge factors in his decision, where does Kearns see his recruiting process currently standing?

"I believe I'm a top recruit and will receive many offers after the camp season I'm one of those tight ends who can play attached or out in space Usually it is more one or the other The programs that play 40 to 60 percent of the time with one or more tight ends are the ones I'm most interested in "

So which schools are standing out early?

"I like Duke, Northwestern, Michigan State, and basically all the Big 10 schools "
