Duke Has Offered Big SC Back

The high octane Blue Devil offense relies heavily on speed at a number of positions. Especially in the backfield. However, in 2012, Duke has made a play for a big time power back out of South Carolina.

"Duke offered me a while back," said Varnville (S.C.) Hampton standout Dondre Brown. "I've talked to Coach Jones since then and I've talked to Coach Cutcliffe as well."

The message from the Duke coaching staff was that the program was in need of a back who had size and ran with power between the tackles. Additionally they needed a player who could factor into the blocking schemes.

At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, Brown seems to fit the bill. As a junior he played running back for the Hampton Red Devils while also playing safety. On offense he carried the ball 170 times for 1,100 yards while scoring 10 touchdowns. On defense he forced three fumbles.

Not bad considering Brown suffered a shoulder injury during the end of the year that limited his carries and playing time. Though it was enough for the Duke coaches to find out about him and request film. Soon after came a visit to Durham, and then a few months later…the offer.

"I actually visited when they played Miami and I liked the campus then. I am going to visit again this fall I think."

Other schools attempting to jump in with Brown include the Hurricanes, Georgia Tech, Georgia, NC State, Clemson, and South Carolina. So far none have offered though each has extended an invitation for Brown to camp this summer.
