The Blue Devil ground attack was paced by sophomore running back Juwan Thompson, who rushed for 47 yards on six attempts. Sophomore quarterback Brandon Connette had eight carries for 39 yards including a one-yard touchdown plunge while junior running back Desmond Scott contributed 31 yards on seven carries. Connette was five-of-nine through the air for 62 yards while redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Boone hit on three-of-eight passes for 14 yards while rushing six times for 16 yards with a five-yard touchdown run.
"All in all, you can tell we have more play-makers on both sides of the ball," said head coach David Cutcliffe following the session.
Cutcliffe also announced that associate head coach Ron Middleton will be off the sidelines indefinitely after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon late last week. Middleton is scheduled to undergo surgery, which will be performed by Duke head team physician Claude "Tee" Moorman III, on Tuesday morning. Shaun Sarrett, a member of the Blue Devil staff since 2008, will resume Middleton's coaching duties with the tight ends.
Duke will host the program's annual "Meet the Blue Devils" event on Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Blue Devils open the 2011 season at home against Richmond on September 3 at 7 p.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium. Tickets are available online at www.GoDuke.com/tickets or by calling the Duke Athletics Ticket Office at 919-681-2583.
