Team Captains Announced

The Blue Devil football program has announced the choice of captains for 2011

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe announced on Monday the naming of Matt Daniels, Charlie Hatcher, Kyle Hill and Sean Renfree as team captains for the 2011 season. The individuals were elected by their teammates.

"I am confident this group of young men will represent our program in a manner that will make everyone associated with Duke University very proud," Cutcliffe said. "These four players exemplify what our program is all about – the pursuit of excellence in everything we do. I couldn't be more pleased with the choices our squad has made for the leadership of this year's team."

Daniels, a senior safety from Fayetteville, Ga., will start in the defensive secondary for the third consecutive season and enters the season as Duke's active leader in tackles (198), pass break-ups (13) and caused fumbles (6). Last year, he finished second on the squad with 93 total tackles while ranking sixth in the ACC in tackles per game (7.75) and second in caused fumbles per game (0.25).

Hatcher, a redshirt senior nose guard from Hamilton, Ohio, will guide Duke's defensive front as the only member of the group playing his final season of eligibility. He has played in 33 career games with 24 starting assignments and amassed 98 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, nine quarterback pressures and two sacks. Among active players in the ACC, he ranks 12th in career tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Hill, a redshirt senior offensive tackle from Orlando, Fla., has been a mainstay along the Blue Devil line for the past three seasons. A starter in 36 consecutive games, Hill has been on the field for 2,611 career snaps and is a two-time Academic All-ACC selection. He ranks tied for third among active ACC players with his 36 career starting assignments.

Renfree, a redshirt junior quarterback from Scottsdale, Ariz., was the recipient of the Carmen Falcone Award last year as Duke's Most Valuable Player. In 2010, Renfree completed 285-of-464 passes for 3,131 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for an additional four scores. He became just the fourth player in school history to throw for 3,000 or more yards as his passing yardage total marked the fifth-highest by a freshman or sophomore in ACC history.

Duke opens the season on Saturday at 7 p.m. versus Richmond in Wallace Wade Stadium. Season and single-game tickets are available online at or by calling the Duke Athletics Ticket Office at 919-681-2583.
