Tony Parker Talks Remaining Process

Five star big man Tony Parker has another change to his visit schedule. He chats with TDD to recap his latest trip and looks forward to his venture to Durham.

You just had your official visit to Memphis, did they roll out the proverbial "red carpet"?

Tony Parker: Not really, the visit was primarily about being on campus and hanging out with the guys. Teams are always going to roll out the red carpet for you, so for this visit it was a big deal that that I got to spend time with the whole team, that was a big deal to me.

Memphis had a lot of guys on visit that weekend, did you spend a lot of time around the other recruits?

Not really, I was only around a couple of the guys like Jarnell Stokes and a few others, it was a great visit.

How did you decide to visit Memphis for one of your officials?

I didn't know for sure where I was going to go for Midnight Madness, so I sat down with my parents and decided to visit Memphis officially for their Midnight Madness. They were never really out of my recruitment as some were saying. Basically the staff and I had been staying in contact and I decided to visit.

What do you think was the benefit for you to take your official visit during Midnight Madness at Memphis ?I

think it was just a great weekend and it gave me another chance to spend time with the coaches and the players, everybody was real cool.

How much communication has Coach Pastner had with you regarding the type of role you would have? Did you have any questions you were hoping to have answered by going on the visit?

They have just said that they want to develop me into a well rounded player and what kind of guys they are hoping to have in the program if I were to go to their school. I know who they are as a program since I've been there four times now.

Let's switch gears and talk about Georgetown. They are your next visit, correct?

Well, they were, but now I'm not going to be going on the visit, we're going to have to re-schedule for another time but I'm not sure on what that date will be.

What has the communication been like with them?

Well, I have only talked with one of their assistant coaches up until now, I have not talked with Coach Thompson as of yet.

What's the draw for them as a program? How have they merited your interest?

Well, it somewhat helps them that they are considered to be a big man school and that they play in the Big East, which is one of the best conferences out there. It's a really good school and they have a good history and tradition.

What are your thoughts on the Big East with the recent announcement that Syracuse and Pitt are switching to the ACC?

I think it's a great move for the ACC to be honest, I mean, it just makes them even more of a powerhouse conference.

Let's talk about UCLA. What are your thoughts on the recent de-commitment of Dominic Artis?

Yeah, that's something I'm aware of. He had to make a decision that was right for him and his situation.

Does that affect your decision at all?

Not really because I could see why he would make that decision and they still have some other talented players like Larry Drew and other guys. I'm not concerned about it, UCLA is one of the top all time historical program.

Is the UCLA history and tradition the biggest selling point for them in your recruitment or is it something different?

I mean, Pauley Pavilion is one of the legendary historical places to play basketball in and they have had one of the best coaches ever in Coach Wooden.

What about the current situation at UCLA that is appealing to you?

Well, they have the new facility that they are putting together that might be ready for Midnight Madness next year. That's a big thing potentially if it gets done. The main thing though is their history and tradition and how they have developed guys in the past.

Your development as a player has always seemed to be a major part of your decision. Do you tend to look more at a program's historical record of developing players or do you look at a more recent track record of developing bigs?

I think it all depends to be honest, I mean, all schools develop and can point to guys they have developed for the NBA, so a lot of what I look at is the speed at which guys are developed in programs.

Do you feel like there are any schools on your list who may not have the same development timeframe in mind for you that you think you should be developed at?

No, not at all, I mean I don't have that issue with any program.

Duke is your next visit. What are your thoughts on what the coaches are indicating about how they are planning on utilizing their bigs a lot more in the offense this year with the Plumlee brothers and Ryan Kelly?

See, the thing is, those guys are not first year guys, they've been there for awhile so I don't really know what they are going to do until the season starts and they start playing. The thing with Coach K is that he's one of the greatest coaches of all time and he has ways that he does things that are very successful, so the team is going to do what they are going to do once they start playing this year, so we'll see how things go.

Does that mean you have a concern with their style of play in a sense?

No, not really. I mean, Coach K, he's a Hall of Fame coach and with Duke, they are like every other program in that they are going to do the things that will help them be successful, so I don't worry about it too much, Coach K is that good a coach.

Would you say that Duke needs to hit a home run with the upcoming visit?

No, not at all. I mean, I've been to Duke before, everybody loves Duke down there, I know it's going to be a really fun atmosphere and I'm going to have a real fun time. Do you have unanswered questions about Duke as a program or what kind of role you would have there ? I don't really have any questions. They have done a good job at explaining to me how I could get better in their program and what kind of guys they are trying to bring in. They've told me they are trying to bring in guys like Shabazz and Julius Randle and Jabari Parker.

Going into the official visit at Duke, what are you looking forward to?

I'm looking forward to just getting a last look at the school. That's the biggest thing with all the visits I've been on, you know you are going in for a weekend, they are going to bring out the best for you. The big thing is making sure that you take out of the visit the things that are important to you because every visit is going to be a ten, you know ? Like it's hard for them to surprise you, but there's a lot of benefits to going on the visits and they play a huge role in my decision.
