Corbin McCarthy Commits

Sleeper California prospect Corbin McCarthy committed to Duke over the weekend

The Duke Blue Devils hope that they have found a diamond in the rough with California safety Corbin McCarthy, who is Duke's latest commitment for the class of 2012.

McCarthy had been searching for a school that felt like home, and it didn't take long for him to realize that Duke was the school that met that criteria.

"I got my offer Sunday morning," McCarthy said. "Coach (David) Cutcliffe and I had a meeting at nine on Sunday morning. We sat down and he said they were offering me a scholarship, and I decided I liked it so much that I wanted to commit. The deciding actor was the people. It is a family-oriented team."

McCarthy said that Coach Cutcliffe did not appear to be expecting an immediate commitment from him, but says that the Duke coaching staff was extremely thrilled to hear that he was joining the program.

"Coach Cut was definitely surprised when I committed, but the entire coaching staff was really happy. It was welcome to the family and bright smiles and hugs. It was real good."

It was a thrilling weekend for the Blue Devil program as a whole, as Duke picked up three commitments from official visitors on Sunday. McCarthy says that he enjoyed getting know a few of his future teammates, and he even says that he struck up a nice bond with one of the other prospects who committed to Duke this weekend.

"Me and Shaquille Powell are both from the west coast, so we kind of stuck together. Saturday night, I told him that I thought that I was going to commit. I saw that he committed right after me which made me pretty happy."

McCarthy has flown under the radar in the world of recruiting up to this point, but he thinks that he has a lot of positive attributes that will allow him to become successful at the next level.

"My speed is what people don't realize. I run a 4.4 forty-yard dash. I can bench 365 and my strength really helps me in press coverage. I have a strong work ethic and I'm a leader. I also definitely believe in God. That's my number one thing is my faith."

With the majority of the offseason still ahead of him, McCarthy says that he will continue to work diligently on his game in hopes that he can become an early contributor when he comes to Duke. So in the end, what was it about the Blue Devil program that made McCarthy give his commitment?

"My dad is a big fan of the program and you can't get a better education than Duke. They swear that the program is lifting up as well. You play in the ACC, so you can't really ask for anything else."
