Euro Update: Dec 27

Tracking former Blue Devils who are playing professionally overseas.

Here is a summary of where in the world all the former Duke players are playing:

Daniel Ewing is playing in Ukraine with Azovmash. He has a number of teammates with American connections, including ex-Morehead State player Ricky Minard, ex-Penn State player Joe Crispin, ex-DII player Radoslav Rancik, former NBA player Oleksiy Pecherov, and Serbian center Ratko Varda, who made a grand total of 1 NBA appearance. The team plays in the city of Mariupol on the coast of the Sea of Azov in the southeastern corner of the country with a population of around 500,000. In addition to playing in the Superleague in Ukraine, the team is still involved in the VTB United League, which includes teams from the republics of the former Soviet Union and a couple of other Eastern European countries. The team was recently eliminated from the Eurocup, which features teams from around Europe that did not make it in the Euroleague.

Shavlik Randolph is playing in China with the Dongguan Leopards. His American teammate is former Washington State and Cal State Fullerton player Josh Akognon. Dongguan is a city in the Guangdong province in southern China with a population of over 8 million people.

DeMarcus Nelson is playing in France with Cholet. He has a lot of teammates with American connections, including two French players, William Gradit and Luc-Arthur Vebobe, who had some schooling here. Other teammates include ex-Cal player Patrick Christopher, ex-Providence player Donnie McGrath, ex-Syracuse player Demetris Nichols, ex-Southern Illinois player Randal Falker, and ex-Miami player Robert Hite. The city of Cholet is in the western part of the country. The team was eliminated from Euroleague qualifiers early in the season and then eliminated after the group stage of the Eurocup, which included teams that lost in the Euroleague qualifiers.

David McClure is playing in Lithuania with Kedainiai. The team is located in a small city in the central part of the country. The team is participating in the Lithuanian League and also the Baltic League, which features a number of teams from around the Baltic Sea.

Marty Pocius and Kyle Singler are playing in Spain with Real Madrid. Their teammates include ex-Utah State star Jaycee Carroll and former NBA player Sergio Rodriguez. Along with an assortment of Spanish competitions, the team is in Euroleague along with a number of other top European teams.

Jon Scheyer is playing in Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He has a number of American teammates, including ex-Alabama player Richard Hendrix, ex-Virginia player Devin Smith, ex-USC player David Bluthenthal, former Northeastern and Duquesne player Shawn James, and ex-Kansas player Keith Langford. In addition to Israeli competitions, the team is involved in Euroleague with other top teams from around the continent and the Adriatic League, which features teams from countries that were formerly part of Yugoslavia.

Many former members of the Women's Basketball team are playing abroad, either as a part of the WNBA offseason or as their main professional team.

Sheana Mosch is playing in Turkey with Antakya. She has a number of teammates with American connections, including ex-Tennessee player Shannon Bobbitt, ex-Maryland player Laura Harper, ex-Iowa player Crystal Smith, ex-UConn player Jessica Moore, and former DII and WNBA player Mactabene Amachree from Nigeria. The team plays in one of the southernmost cities in Turkey on the Mediterranean coast with a population around 200,000.

Jess Foley is playing in Australia with the Townsville Fire. She has a number of teammates from a variety of countries with connections to the United States, including ex-Louisiana Tech player Shanavia Dowdell, ex-Princeton player Casey Lockwood, ex-Montana State player Rebecca Mercer, ex-Washington player Nicole Romeo, and Oregon duo Micaela Cocks and Ellie Manou. Townsville is in Queensland in the northeastern part of the country and has a population of nearly 200,000, making it the 13th largest city in the country.

Mistie Bass is playing in France with Challes. She has one American teammate, ex-Nebraska player Danielle Page. The team is located in Challes-les-Eaux, a small town in the eastern part of France.

Chante Black is playing in China with Shandong.

Carrem Gay is playing in the second tier in France with Toulouse. The team was playing in the top division last season but they finished near the bottom of the standings and were relegated to the next level down. Carrem was one of the players that they brought in to win their way back to the top for next season. Toulouse is the 4th largest city in the country.

Bridgette Mitchell is playing in Poland with Energa Torun. Her teammates with American connections include ex-UNC player Leah Metcalf, ex-Eastern Washington player Julieanne Page, and South Florida duo Jessica Dickson and Jazmine Sepulveda. The city of Torun has about 200,000 residents. Jasmine Thomas is playing in the Czech Republic with Frisco Brno. Her American teammate is ex-Tennessee and current WNBA player Ashley Robinson. In addition to the domestic league, the club is playing in the Euroleague Women with other top women's teams from around Europe. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic with about 400,000 inhabitants. Krystal Thomas is playing in France with Lyon. Lyon is the 3rd largest city in France. Karima Christmas is playing in Israel with Bnot Hasharon. Her teammates include former UNC guard Italee Lucas, ex-UConn player Ketia Swanier, ex-Virginia Tech player Kerri Gardin, and ex-Siena player Shimrit Gigi. The team plays in the small city of Ra'anana on the coast of the Mediterranean.
