Due diligence leads to Duke offer

Running a 4-2-5 defensive scheme puts a heavy emphasis on recruiting the secondary. The Blue Devils are doing just that in 2013 and have recently extended an offer to one of the top prospects on the board from the state of Florida.

"I received a Duke offer on my father's 42nd birthday," said Florida State University School safety Austin Logan. "I had been talking to the coaching staff since the Fall of last year, and they finally made the offer on March 19th. Prior to that, Coach Derek Jones came to my high school during the last evaluation period in January and we had a great conversation at school about Duke and football."

Logan who measures out at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, currently sports eight scholarship offers. The Blue Devils join FIU, Northwestern, Georgia State, Purdue, South Florida, Vanderbilt and Stanford as schools who have stepped up with early offers. So how did Logan get the news on the 19th?

"Ever since I had met with the coaches I had kept up with them. All of a sudden I got a message over Spring Break to call the Duke coaching staff immediately. Once I got to Miami for break I called and Coach Jones told me I had an offer from Duke. He said that Duke likes to thoroughly evaluate their potential offerees before making the call. He also explained what a Duke offer meant.

And Logan's reaction to his eighth offer of the recruiting period?

"I was very appreciative of the Duke offer because they took their time and did a lot of due diligence on me as a student athlete. Because of that i know they didn't just offer because other schools had."

Logan says the relationship he has with his position coach is a big factor in his interest in the Blue Devil program.

"The relationship with Coach Jones has been great so far and I feel that he has a lot of genuine interest in me as a student as well as an athlete. My plan is to come up to Duke in June for their one day camp. I'll probably come up a day early so I can take an unofficial visit before the camps begins. Honestly, I'm really excited about the Duke offer because they offer great academics and the opportunity to bring a program back to prominence."

As a junior Logan finished his season with 40 tackles, two interceptions, and eight pass breakups.
