One on one with Anthony Barber

One of the top point guards in the country grew up an admitted follower of the Blue Devils. So is Duke pursuing this five star prospect, and at what level? TDD spoke with Anthony Barber to get the latest at the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp.

TDD: What's it been like competing against the cream of the crop here at the camp?

Anthony Barber: It's a great experience. I really enjoy it because you are playing against a bunch of guys at or above your level, which makes it really competitive.

Have you had much interaction with John Lucas since you've been here?

I've talked to him here and there, and he's always providing a lot of wisdom. He's been where I'm trying to go as a player. He helps me understand the standards based on his experiences. I just take everything he says in because it's good advice on how to keep being positive in life.

What's it been like playing for a highly rated AAU program such as Boo Williams?

It's great because not many people get a chance to play AAU ball - especially for a good team like Boo. I just cherish the opportunity, and love playing with great players.

Growing up in Hampton va-how much did you follow Allen Iverson?

Oh yeah, I followed him a lot growing up and my mom actually used to hang out a lot with him. I got to hang out with him a few times since then.

How do you feel about he comparisons being made of you to Allen Iverson?

I really take it as motivation and, honestly, I use it as motivation for myself to be a great player and make it to the next level like he did.

Switching to recruiting, Anthony, Duke is a school mentioned a lot with you. Can you elaborate on their interest in you?

With Duke…I've been up there three or four times and have talked with Coach K right before the first Nike EYBL event. Coach K told me he was coming out to see me. We talk a lot about basketball & where I'm trying to get as a player. They talk with me about a lot of stuff, really -- recruiting, academics, and they tell me to keep working hard so I can get where I want to get.

It's also been mentioned that you grew up with a high degree of interest in Duke. Is that true?

Oh yeah, Duke was my school growing up for sure. They were my favorite video game team to play with.

Who was your guy in that respect?

Oh I played with Scheyer a lot. Singler too

What other schools have you received a lot of interest from?

Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Kentucky has called my dad a few times as well.

How do you think you are going to handle the new phone rules?

It's something my dad, myself, and my coach are working out.

Touching back on Duke, have they offered yet?

No, and it's more motivating than anything else for me. I mean Duke is a great school, and they are going to do what they are going to do. They are going to see guys they really like and guys they don't like as much. If I don't end up at Duke and go to another school that plays them, I'm just going to play harder when we go against them. I'm not the type of person who if I don't get my way, I'm going to be all upset. I'm just going to keep playing hard no matter what happens.

Who are some of the closer friendships you have with other players around the circuit?

I'm real cool with Troy Williams, and Justin Anderson here at UVa. Also with Jontel Evans.

I've heard there's a good relationship with you and Coach Grant at Alabama as well.

Yeah that's going real well. I mean, if you don't like him as a person I don't know what your problem is. I just like him a lot because he's real with you and gives it to you straight. When we get done here at NBA Camp I'm gonna get down there for a visit.
