Brandner brings athleticism to Duke

He may have been somewhat of an unknown to Duke faithful, but South Carolina offensive tackle Gabe Brandner popped up on the radar in a big way. The 6'6 Bradner committed to Duke on Monday and spoke to TDD about the decision on Tuesday afternoon.

"I came up for practice in April, and then decided to camp earlier this month," said Columbia (S.C.) Heathwood Hall Episcopal standout Gabe Brandner. "After coming back I decided to commit."

Brandner picked Duke over offers from Air Force and Appalachian State before learning that Clemson had decided to jump in as well.

"Honestly, I was a late bloomer when it comes to recruiting, I think my major weaken as a player is my weight which is 250 pounds."

Of course weight can be added by the program with a good strength and conditioning staff. Inherent athleticism and ability cannot. And that's what Brander brings to Duke.

"I play football, basketball, baseball, and track, and I feel like I am a very good athlete. I am going to play offensive tackle or, perhaps, tight end."

So what made it Duke for Brandner?

"The coaches there are just the kind of people I want to be around. I really enjoyed working with Coach Cutcliffe, Coach Jones, and Coach Latina."
