Is Darren Andrews firmly committed?

La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat athlete Darren Andrews committed to Duke way back in June but after receiving an offer from his hometown school, will he look around a bit?

Darren Andrews is a talented two-way player who has the ability to play receiver or corner at the next level. He has explosive speed and quickness and is being recruited primarily as a slot receiver at this time.

Andrews camped with Duke over the summer where he impressed enough to pick up an offer from the Blue Devils. He committed just a few days later but the Blue Devils have some stiff competition in this one.

"UCLA offered me last week," Andrews said. "I was totally surprised by it, I really didn't expect it. They were sending me letters here and there and then really picked up their interest over the last month or so. Then I got a call from Coach Yarber, the WR coach and he said they were offering so I was pretty excited.

"I was at their game last weekend against Arizona and they looked really good. The atmosphere was crazy and I had a good time there. I plan on taking an official visit there as well and I'm going to give them a serious look. I'm still committed to Duke but UCLA is definitely in the discussion."

Andrews said in addition to UCLA and Duke, he also wants to take visits to the other schools that have offered- Hawaii, Houston and Washington State.

"I still really like Duke a lot, it's a good fit for me," Andrews said. "What I did was take football out of the equation and academics are big for me. It's tough to beat a Duke education and I also have always wanted to leave home and experience something new. That's why this is going to be such a tough decision for me in the end but after I take my visits, I think I'll have a good idea of what I want to do."

Bishop Amat will take on Long Beach Poly in a Pac 5 1st round game this Friday.
