Duke among three standouts for FL QB

Nicodem Pierre plans on waiting until Signing Day before making his college choice, but three programs seem to be recruiting him the most right now. For the 2014 quarterback, that communication with coaches over time will play a big part in his final decision. Get the latest on the Coral Reef (Miami, FL) athlete here.

"I don't really have top schools, but I have schools that I'm in constant communication with and Duke, Nebraska, and Appalachian State are the top three," Nicodem Pierre said.

Pierre has offers from those three along with several others including Clemson, Louisville, and South Florida. At Duke, Special Teams Coordinator Zac Roper is Pierre's main recruiter, but he keeps in contact with several coaches there.

"Every week, I basically talk to the whole coaching staff. On the day when the coaches were able to (start) calling players, they were the only school who's head coach gave me a call, which showed that they are very interested in me. That bumped them up a few spots," Pierre said.

Nebraska is another program after the Sunshine State signal-caller. Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck visited Pierre at school earlier this week. They couldn't go outside because of bad weather, but the two had a good talk.

"We just talked about (with) my ability to run the ball and throw the ball, the Nebraska offense would be a perfect fit for me and I would be a perfect fit for their system," Pierre said.

"I really like him as a person and a coach. He's really down to earth, our conversations just feel like he's one of my friends, not like a coach where I might feel like I need to hold back something I would say."

Appalachian State is also very much after Pierre and his skills.

"One of our teammates, Marcus Leslie, he took a visit up there. He was telling me that it's nice and everyone is nice, it's a good community," he said.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback expects to wait until Signing Day before making a decision. He plans to take a few visits this summer and said Duke and Nebraska are at the top of the list. He also may camp at Florida State.

While a decision is far off for Pierre, he'll be keeping a few things in mind as he evaluates the programs recruiting him.

"First things first will be the education, if I feel like I will be successful with that program. Then I'll look at the football program and see how everything goes from there," he said.

"I want to be able to maintain my dual-threat (ability) because I feel that that is what keeps defenses on their heels."
