The Orlando Summer League will begin play on Sunday afternoon, and features 10 NBA teams fielding rosters comprised of 2013 draft picks, second and third year rotational players, and free agents looking to catch on somewhere.
The Blue Devils have several alumni participating in the league at various levels:
Brooklyn Nets: Mason Plumlee will be wearing #22 for the Nets, and will make his debut on Sunday night against Detroit. It'll be the first chance for Plumlee to play for new Brooklyn head coach Jason Kidd, who will coach the roster along with his new staff of assistant coaches including Lawrence Frank. Plumlee will be joined by current Nets players Tyshawn Taylor and Tornike Shengelia.
Detroit Pistons: Kyle Singler will join a talented Pistons summer team along with 2013 draftees Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (9th overall), Tony Mitchell (37th overall) and Peyton Siva (56th overall). Additionally, Detroit is sending current players Andre Drummond, Khris Middleton, Viacheslav Kravtsov and Kim English to the league. Joining Singler on the roster will be his brother, E.J., who is an un-drafted free agent.
Boston Celtics: Nolan Smith's rookie contract option was not picked up by the Portland Trail Blazers, and so the 6'2 guard is spending his summer auditioning for new teams. He's signed on to play with the Celtics' summer team, and there is buzz that the C's may, in fact, look at add the former Duke player to their NBA roster with a good showing. Joining Smith of the roster are former Missouri guard Phil Pressy, Marquette's Darius Johnson-Odom, former Syracuse big man Fab Melo, and Gonzaga's Kelly Olynyk.
Indiana Pacers: Second year forward Miles Plumlee will look to build on a rookie season that saw him out of the Pacers' rotation for much of the year. As a first year pro, Miles appeared in 14 games, averaging 1.0 points and 1.6 rebounds. His last appearance was on April 17th.
New Orleans Pelicans: Former Blue Devils Austin Rivers and Lance Thomas are expected to participate in the Las Vegas Summer League, which tips on July 12th. It'll be the first time Rivers has been on the court since suffering a fractured right hand in March that forced him to miss the final 23 games of the 2013 regular season. Rivers will be joined by Lance Thomas, who appeared in 59 games for New Orleans last season, starting nine times. Thomas averaged 2.5 points and 1.9 rebounds in 10.9 minutes per night - those numbers, it was revealed by head coach Monty Williams, included a stint where Thomas played with a strained MCL. Thomas is expected to be back with the Pelicans next season.
