Cutcliffe talks NC Central

Head coach David Cutcliffe spoke with the media today about the team's opening game.

I know the players are excited. I thought we had a really good practice this morning. The focus was good. The energy was good. We focused on a more mental preparation on Saturday and Sunday, covered a lot of game situations to get that in and also so their legs were fresh.

I see us being able to play a lot of people early. Our first few games are afternoon games. It's going to be pretty warm, so we're going to go ahead and look at possibly playing 60 or so people. You'll see true freshmen.

(North Carolina) Central is an athletic team. I looked at all their tape from a year ago. Their quarterback has really found himself. He's playing good football. They've got quality size in the offensive line. They're kind of rebuilding on the defensive front. I'm really impressed with their athleticism in the secondary. I like the fact that we're playing a fast team in our opener.

We certainly fit the look. We have a little more size and strength and speed. Think about how many snaps Perry Simmons and Dave Harding, Laken Tomlinson and Tacoby Cofield have played. And defensively Justin Foxx, Kenny Anunike, Dezmond Johnson. They've grown up. When you go from being a puppy, you get beat on when you're a puppy, you put your tail between your legs. It takes a little while to build a dog up. I think they feel better about themselves. They're veterans. We have 29 juniors and seniors who have played a lot of football. It adds confidence; they play faster.
