Barnwell will join as a preferred walk-on

Earlier this month the Blue Devils earned a commitment from in-state punter Destry Barnwell. TDD spoke with Barnwell recently to get the particulars on his situation and relationship with Duke.

"Yes, I have committed to Duke as a preferred walk-on," said Destry Barnwell. "I felt like Duke was the place I belonged. It really came down to the coaching staff and the direction the program is headed."

Barnwell made several visits to Durham before speaking with the coaching staff about joining the program as a preferred walk-on. It was the culmination of a long recruitment, however.

"The Duke coaches showed interest in me before this past summer, and really showed me that I was wanted. I was also being recruited by North Carolina, East Carolina, Western Carolina, South Carolina, Appalachian State, Kansas State, and NC State."

"South Carolina was getting ready to offer me, but I felt at home as soon as I walked on campus at Duke, and the coaches really helped me feel that way."

Barnwell reports being recruited by coaches Roper and Cutcliffe. He averaged 43 yards per kick this season at Hough with eight kicks inside the 20 yard line. His long kick on the season was a 62 harder.

As a preferred walk-on, Barnwell is expecting to report to camp on July 1st with the rest of his classmates.
