Dumezich commits as preferred walk-on

A few days in advance of Signing Day 2014 the Blue Devils got a surprise addition to the class of 2014 in the form of Illinois offensive lineman Steve Dumezich who will enrolled at Duke this summer as a preferred walk-on. The 6-foot-5 prospect spoke with TDD after announcing his commitment on Twitter.

"I have committed to Duke," said Steve Dumezich. "I will be a preferred walk-on and will enroll in June. The coaches told me 85 percent of the players coming in are going to enroll in the second set of summer classes."

Measuring out at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Dumezich projects as an offensive tackle at the collegiate level and was recruited as such by Illinois, Western Michigan, and Harvard. However, the opportunity to play at Duke won out for a couple of reasons…

"The opportunity to play on a top 25 football team while getting an education from one of the 10 best institutions was too much to pass up."

Dumezich reported his main contacts at Duke have been Ethan Johnson and Kevin Lehman, both of whom he notified when making his decision.

The preferred walk-on program at Duke had long been neglected and devoid of high level players for years before Cutcliffe took over the team. For his part, Dumezich looks the part of a Division I prospect.

"Right now I'm 6'5 and 265 pounds with a 5.06 forty yard dash time. I have a 335 pound bench press max, and 455 pound squat max. I feel that I am a pretty quick tackle who can play low and I have good technique. I know I need to work on finishing blocks. I feel like I'll end up as a guard or tackle."

Dumezich visited Duke unofficially in December.
