Nation's No. 3 center talks Duke visit

Brian Chaffin (6'2, 280, C) visited Duke for junior day and discusses his impression of the program.

Prior to David Cutcliffe taking over in Durham, the Blue Devil offensive line wasn't considered one of the team's strengths. These days, however, Duke's O-line is consistently among the better units in the ACC. That's not lost on the nation's No. 3 ranked center prospect who visited Durham for junior day. "My visit to Duke was top-notch," said Charlotte (N.C.) Christian School offensive lineman Brian Chaffin. "I am pretty familiar with the school and the program because some of their players - Kelby and Kyler Brown are from my school, and my overall impression was that Duke was a very welcoming place."

Chaffin, who measures out at 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds, is considered a three star prospect and the nation's third best center. He has offers from California, Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, North Carolina, Northwestern, and Virginia Tech so far, with several other high majors in pursuit as well.

"Right now I'm pretty open right now, and I was recently offered by California. I'm going to continue to see which schools are interested and then go from there with things."

Regarding the Duke visit and recruiting pitch, Chaffin says the Blue Devils are very direct in their approach as he interacts with Coaches Cutcliffe and Latina.

"Duke has told me they need highly rated guys in this class so that they can continue to be at this high level. I know that Coach Latina has a track record of getting guys to the NFL and the program has really great momentum at the moment. Now they want to stay where they are and even continue to move up."

"Also, they are really a big family there. I know that they work hard to take care of their players and prepare them. I can see that they are an extremely tight group. They also have great academics, and they know those are very, very important to me."

As evidenced by his 4.4 grade point average at Charlotte Christian.

On the field Chaffin describes himself as a "smart player who breaks down his opponents and himself with film study", as well as a player who is known for his athleticism and mobility.

"I love to get after people," Chaffin said. "I'm going to go after you for four quarters, I'm going to bury you any time that I can, but I also consider myself a smart player that's good in space and is pretty athletic."

He reports weight room numbers that include a 360 pound max on the bench press and a 520 pound max in the squat.
