With lacrosse and school consuming almost all of his time, St. Joseph (Montvale, N.J.) linebacker Joe Giles-Harris has been relatively mum about his recruiting. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder hasn't taken any visits since March, and still doesn't have any clear standouts among his dozen or so offers.
But that doesn't mean Giles-Harris (who just completed a 15-4 lacrosse campaign) hasn't generated his share of news. Recruiters streamed through St. Joseph's Montvale in earnest this evaluation period, and many programs have been pushing hard for the versatile linebacker's services.
"There were a lot of school that came in, a lot of schools talking to me. I recently got offers from Wisconsin, Virginia and West Virginia," said Giles-Harris, who holds verbals from Maryland, Arizona State, Boston College, Duke, Northwestern, Illinois, NC State, Syracuse, Temple, UVA, WVU and Wisconsin. "Those were all good offers from really good programs, but no one really stands out right now. I'm still pretty much open."
Though Giles-Harris doesn't like to use words like "favorites" or "leaders," he did mention that a few schools are making a strong run for him. He said those programs' respective recruiters have stayed in touch via social media and have let him know how much he's wanted and can help their teams.
"Duke, Northwestern, Maryland, Illinois and NC State have been in touch the most," Giles-Harris said. "So far I know I'm going up to Duke in June sometime, and I plan on visiting Maryland again around then too. I'm not sure about the other ones yet, but I know I'm getting to [Duke and UMD]."
The Jersey backer specifically talked about his continued rapport with UMD area recruiter Keith Dudzinski. The two have been in touch for well over a year now, and Giles-Harris described their relationship as "family like" and "very close."
"I like Maryland and really like Coach Dud. Whenever we talk, he talks about sports, family and how everything is going," said Giles-Harris, who had previously lauded the Terps' Big Ten shift, educational opportunities and Under Armour connection. "It is basically a relaxing conversation. We've known each other for a long time."
Giles-Harris, who did not see a school in April or May, was last in College Park, Md., March 10. He'd been there before for a trip last summer, as well as games when he was younger. His aunt actually lives in Silver Spring, Md., and Giles-Harris and his family have been down to see her numerous times, giving him an opportunity to take in the nearby university.
"I have family close to Maryland and that's good to know," Giles-Harris said previously. "And when I was there [March 10] I learned a lot about the plans for new facilities, saw the academic buildings and met with the coaches and academic advisors.
"I liked watching them practice and I think it's a great defense; they want me at inside linebacker. I enjoyed myself at Maryland and I'm looking forward to getting back."
Although Giles-Harris has only visited UMD, NC State, Boston College and Rutgers, he believes he'll see enough schools this summer to make an informed college decision sometime in August. He previously said he had "no clue" when he would be ready to announce, hinting that the process could drag well into the fall.
"I'm going to try to make [my decision] before the season now," Giles-Harris said. "That's the plan right now."
