Sean Obi to wear #34 at Duke

After finalizing his transfer to Duke, former Rice big man Sean Obi is preparing to enroll in Durham in June. Before heading down to campus, however, he had to decide on his number.

"I'm going to wear number 34," said Sean Obi. "I was given the numbers that were available, and decided on that one because I wore it in high school. Also, some of my favorite big men like Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaq wore it."

Obi will be enrolling at Duke for the summer session where he will begin classes and participate in the various off-season activities with his new teammates. That includes regular workouts with the team's new center, Jahlil Okafor, who is likely a top five pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. That matchup, was one of the things that sold Obi on Duke as he previously explained.

I'm so excited about that! He's so talented, he's a real big man, which is something you don't see all that much - a big who is so skilled and so very talented. I'm so excited because I'm going to work very hard in practice everyday and I'm going to make him better and he's going to do the same for me. I'm looking forward to it, it's going to be really good for us."

As for the last few weeks before heading to Duke, Obi says he's been given a workout schedule and outline by the Duke training staff that will help prepare him for what's coming in terms of preseason training.

"They sent me the outline when I got home and I've been working on it every day. Right now I'm at 6-foot-9 and 255 pounds."

Obi will become the 17th player in Duke history to wear number 34, joining players such as Ryan Kelly, Mike Dunleavy, and Jim Spanarkel.

Other front court players to wear the uniform include Kelly (2010-2013), Jamal Boykin (2006-2007) Crawford Palmer (1989-1991); Chris Burgess (1998-1999); Fred Cox (1961-1963); Bill Jackman (1983); Doug Kistler (1959-1961).
